I'd argue there's no shoe more versatile than a loafer. Now, before we debate, just think about it. Trainers, although comfy and always cool, don't fit the brief for all occasions. Heels, mules and boots are all inherently stylish but unrealistic for everyday running around and commuting. Loafers, though? They can do it all. Office days, laidback dates, dressy happy hours, weekend errands—you name it, they work. Plus, they go with just about everything in your wardrobe. Jeans, trousers, midi skirts and dresses all pair seamlessly with loafers; even your comfy leggings can work with the right pair.

As a hardcore flat-shoe lover, I feel that loafers are often an under-appreciated workhorse in a shoe collection, even though they earn top marks in both the style and comfort categories. Plus, as sophisticated as they look, it always comes as a shock just how easy they are to slip on and wear all day—at least after breaking them in.
