12 Outfits That Will Make You Feel Like You're on Holiday, Even If You're Not

You don't have to book a flight to dress for the summer season—here's how to look like you're on holiday, without even packing a suitcase.

I don't know about you, but with each passing day, and the closer we get to the summer equinox, the more a holiday abroad feels like a real necessity. Perhaps its the increase in temperature, the desire to be outside (as opposed to being cooped up indoors), and the idea of dressing in lighter and brighter layers that has got me checking flights to just about anywhere right now. My summer wardrobe is calling out for a good time, but until I book my next trip, I will have to settle for bringing a little bit of sunshine to my city looks at home.

What's great about summer dressing is that you can tailor it to work for home or abroad, as well as for weekend relaxation. With a few styling tweaks, there's no need to save your best pieces for holiday wear exclusively—wear them for dinner and drinks in the city, gallery hopping, or lazy picnics in the park to get the most use out of your investments.

A capsule wardrobe, the method of curating a more considered and pared-back collection of clothing, should be able to fit to your needs all year round, in theory. For your summer capsule, keep things light, airy and relaxed, and add touches of luxury in your accessories, footwear and sunglasses to give polished and grown-up appeal.

If you're travelling somewhere hot and gorgeous soon, or even sticking to home turf this summer season, I have compiled 12 timeless looks that will look tasteful, stylish and easy-going, wherever you may end up.

1. GALLERY DAY

Style Notes: Nothing screams summer more than a white maxi dress. A ribbed cotton one, much like Chrissy's, will make you feel polished and put-together, whilst also keeping you cool in the heat. Keep accessories vintage-feel and monochromatic for that timeless appeal. An Aperol spritz shouldn't be far at hand either, once all of the art galleries have been ticked off your list.

2. ROOFTOP DRINKS

Style Notes: In the sheer heat of the summer, a simple one-hued swimsuit can be a total wardrobe hero. Great on its own (a more grown-up alternative to a bikini), but when teamed with, say, a skirt, loose linen trousers or shirts over the top, it becomes a sleek shape-wear staple. Take notes from Mimi Nguyen and wear a swishy, pleated skirt on top, and finish with pop-colour mesh ballet flats. Simple but effective.

Style Notes: If you're not one for dressing too drastically different from your regular home self, you can adopt a few simple tweaks to level up your fits to give them holiday appeal. Alexis Foreman is a prime example of this, pairing crisp white trousers and mocha-toned poplin shirt (a polished city 'fit), with tasteful summer accessories. A statement earring, sleek belt, barely-there strappy sandals and molten-metal cuff take this to the beach in a few simple steps.

Style notes: There's nothing like slipping on a simple linen garment. The lightweight, easy and breezy fabric makes it the ideal solution for summer dresses, skirt and shirts. The one-and-done dress makes getting dressed quickly (for the city, or the summer escape), a no-brainer, and paired with pretty gold jewellery, a graceful look can come together in a matter of minutes. Go barefoot at the beachbar, or pack a heeled sandal for the city.

Style notes: What's key about this look is the subtle monochromatic pairing of the silky dress and knitwear, nonchalantly draped over the shoulders. The more pared-back, the better, and the accessories can adopt this method too. An artsy earring, and off-white mule give a 90s simplicity, making this look spot-on for hotel dinners on vacay or in your home city.

Style notes: Another great way to layer a swimsuit, making it appropriate for the city, is teaming it with a pair of long-line shorts. Julie Sergent Ferreri expertly models this, and adds nautical accessories to give it a maritime moment. Stick to one key shade here (in this instance, burgundy), for intentional and thoughtful styling. This look will take you from window shopping to lazing in the sun in a heartbeat.
