I'm an Art Director and Wear Comfortable Clothes Often—These Are My Staples

Learning about style from different points of view is what makes fashion so inspiring. To that end, we routinely tap different creatives to get a sense of their sartorial journey and the pieces they rely on to create their signature looks. We recently chatted with Jax De Armas, art director at Nuuly. If you’re not familiar with Nuuly yet, the brand has Nuuly Rent, which is a subscription rental service. There’s also Nuuly Thrift—the new resale marketplace. What’s interesting is that you can buy and sell pieces, and when you sell, you can either transfer your money directly to your bank account or redeem for Nuuly cash, which will be 10% more at Nuuly Thrift and any URBN brand (Anthropologie, Free People, Urban Outfitters, BHLDN, or Terrain).
As the art director for Nuuly, De Armas spends a lot of her days on set as she guides the aesthetic for the brand. As a result, she lives in comfortable (and chic) pieces. If you too favor this style (come on, who doesn’t love the comfy aspect?), we thought you’d be interested in the staples De Armas turns on the regular.
Below you’ll uncover her tried-and-true items, along with testimonials and styling references. In addition, you’ll also see items you could rent from Nuuly if you were to subscribe (note that those pieces showcase the retail value, but they could be part of your Nuuly subscription). There are also other shopping items sprinkled throughout.
Sweater-Vest
On De Armas: Levi’s jeans; DemyLee vest; Original Retro Brand, ACDC Rock World Tour tee; Dr. Martens shoes
"I’m a sucker for a sweater-vest styled in a ’90s way.”
Levi's and a White Button-Up Shirt
On De Armas: Vintage 501 Levi’s jeans; We the Free shirt
"Nothing says ‘effortlessly cool’ better than a pair of vintage Levi’s and a white button-up.”
Graphic Tee
On De Armas: Lacausa Willow pants; Vintage graphic tee; Hutch blazer; Converse sneakers
"I can never pass up a good vintage graphic tee! Pared-back to a leather blazer and baggy trousers… chef’s kiss!”
Oversize Outerwear
On De Armas: ASTR the Label coat; vintage Levi’s jacket and jeans; vintage Stuart Weitzman boots
"Anyone that knows me knows I live in a plaid overcoat all winter. It’s essential to my wardrobe, and I am welcoming this one into the rotation with open arms.”
Converse Sneakers
On De Armas: Brixton pants; Rue Stiic sweater; Converse sneakers
"My high-top Converse are probably my current favorites, especially with a trouser. I love the contrast of modern workwear with classic streetwear.”
Loose Trousers
On De Armas: DRA bomber; Native Youth cardigan; thrifted wool trousers; Bass Weejuns loafers
"One of my simple pleasures in life is finding perfect thrifted trousers that I don’t need to have tailored! Also, pairing them with this Nuuly bomber jacket was love at first sight.”
7. Relaxed, Neutral Separates
On De Armas: UO trench; Amo jeans; thrifted shirt and boots
"I love a neutral palette. There’s something about adding a bit of a heel and collared shirt that really levels up the mood.”
