6 Black LGBTQ+ Designers We Love and Support

There is a lot of work to be done as we fight against systemic racism and for the end of police brutality against the Black community. We compiled a collection here of anti-racist actions you can take, including (but not limited to) voting, protesting, signing petitions, educating, contacting government leaders, and donating if you’re in the position to do so. It is also crucial to support Black-owned brands now and forever. This is especially imperative given the financial impact COVID-19 has had on Black-owned brands. (Please see this helpful graphic by Mona Chalabi for more.)
We recently highlighted Black-owned fashion and beauty brands to support, and given that it is Pride Month, we also compiled a list of Black LGBTQ+ designers. After all, Pride exists because trans and queer people of color like Marsha P. Johnson were on the frontlines fighting for LGBTQ+ rights during the Stonewall uprising in 1969. Queer people wouldn’t have the rights we have today without people like Johnson. So it is critical that we spotlight Black, queer creatives now and always.
To that end, we’re highlighting some of the innovative designers we love below. Shop them if you’re able to or bookmark and follow to reference for inspiration always.
Christopher John Rogers
Christopher John Rogers—who also happens to be the 2019 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner—is a favorite for his striking and bold collections that, simply put, spark joy.
Stoney Michelli and Uzo Ejikeme
L.A.-based designers Stoney Michelli and Uzo Ejikeme’s gender-free line, Stuzo Clothing, stocks those cool streetwear must-haves like hoodies, tees, and slouchy button-downs.
Victor Glemaud
This Haiti-born designer debuted his coveted knitwear line back in 2006 "for all people, genders, races, sizes, and personalities.” He also recently expanded his size offerings with his latest collection.
Pierre Davis
Back in 2019, Pierre Davis became the first openly trans woman designer to showcase during NYFW with her brand No Sesso, which she designed with her creative partner, Arin Hayes. The brand features a range of unisex silhouettes including gorgeous tanks, reworked dresses, and fun logo socks.
LaQuan Smith
LaQuan Smith has been designing his celeb-favorite line since he was 21. It's really no surprise A-listers from Rihanna to Beyoncé are fans given his glamorous and cutting-edge designs.
Telfar Clemens
Telfar Clemens’s collection of unisex pieces is highly sought-after, especially the range of iconic totes that are now certified It bags.
