The Best Foundation Brushes for a Seamless Finish, According to a Beauty Editor
We've tried our fair share of foundation brushes over the years, and these are the ones that come out on top.

Grace Lindsay
I am the proud owner of an extensive collection of makeup brushes. How many do I actually have? I honestly couldn't tell you. My obsession began on my first day of training for a year-long, extensive professional makeup artistry certificate at Delamar Academy. We were all given a hefty kit of products and tools, and upon unravelling my pristine new brush set, it was love at first sight. The next year really showed me just how pivotal brushes are to execute looks, whether they be for beauty, fashion, theatre, TV, or film.
My most-used brush during that time—and to this day—is the humble foundation brush. It really is the quickest and easiest way to achieve the desired finish on either yourself or someone else, as foundation brushes allow for more control and concentrated application of product.
So what exactly do you need to look for in a foundation brush? I caught up with top British makeup artist Hannah Martin, who knows a thing or two about what makes a brush brilliant, having launched her own collection with Ciaté London a few years ago.
What to Look for in a Foundation Brush
"I always go for synthetic hair, as not only are they cruelty-free, but they work best with both powder and liquid foundations," Martin explains. "This replicates the texture of hair and allows the product to be well dispersed as each hair is expertly designed to blend and stipple.
"A flatter foundation brush is best for a sheer liquid base application, whilst a denser brush will give a more full-coverage effect. You also want to find a sturdy brush. Your foundation brush goes through a lot, and for longevity, it's best to find [the best] quality and price point that works for you."
How to Use a Foundation Brush
Martin says the very first step is to ensure you’re not applying too much foundation. "I tend to place a small amount on my hand and lightly dip the brush in to coat the bristles rather than to soak them through," she says.
"I first start by placing [foundation] in the centre of the face, and I use little strokes starting around the nose and then blending out towards the hairline. Focus on blending from the centre [of the face] to the hairline, ears and neck—this will allow for the coverage to target where it’s most needed in the centre of the face and prevents those harsh neck lines we all dread."

- Best angled foundation brush: NYX Professional Makeup Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation Brush
- Best dual-sided foundation brush: It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Complexion Brush
1. Real Techniques Expert Face Brush
First up is this foundation brush from Real Techniques. "This is the makeup brush I use daily to apply my base makeup," says junior beauty editor Grace Lindsay. "The shape is a little wider than other brushes I have tried, meaning it takes me less time in the morning to get a seamless finish. The synthetic bristles feel smooth and can be used with both cream and liquid products, allowing me to keep my makeup bag nice and concise. It's great for both natural and more full-coverage makeup looks, plus, the fact that it's only £10 is a huge plus."
Pros
- Soft bristles
- Creates a seamless finish
- Can be used with both cream and liquid foundation formulas
- Affordable
Cons
- Some may prefer a smaller shape
2. Charlotte Tilbury Magic Complexion Brush
One thing is for sure: Charlotte Tilbury knows how to ace an airbrushed base. Much like the name suggests, this tool enables you to recreate the magic of the world-class makeup artist’s wizardry at home. The ultra-soft, flat brush makes light work of buffing and blending foundation formulas seamlessly into the skin. Plus, it works with powders, creams and liquid products.
Pros
- Works with a range of foundation formulas
- Creates a seamless finish
Cons
- A little more expensive
3. NYX Professional Makeup Can't Stop Won't Stop Foundation Brush
This foundation brush features soft, synthetic bristles, designed to work with liquid formulas. They are densely packed, making it the perfect pick for buffing in full-coverage foundations. As you can see, it has an angled top, which also helps to hug the curves of your face. I've found it to be great at blending cream bronzers into the cheekbones for a sculpted finish.
Pros
- Angled shape hugs the curves of your face
- More affordable
Cons
- Some may prefer a flat brush shape
4. Haus Labs Foundation Brush
The Haus Lab foundation is great, but this brush is even better. The high-quality, soft-bristled brush sits on a weighty, luxe handle in a stylish silver design. It's designed for liquid formulations, and applies foundation evenly and beautifully for a filter-effect finish.
Pros
- Stylish design
- Soft bristles
- Blends product evenly
Cons
- Designed to be used with liquid formulas only
5. Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Foundation Brush
I'm a massive fan of the Rare Beauty Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation, which buffs in like an absolute dream with this brush. Because it's quite fine, it's also great for blending out my cream blush and bronzer. Interestingly enough, it's been designed to mimic the shape of the fingertip, which means you get a more natural finish and can build coverage where needed.
Pros
- Can be used with liquid, cream and powder formulas
- Brush shape gives a natural finish
Cons
- A little more expensive
6. Fenty Beauty Full-Bodied Foundation Brush
This medium-density liquid foundation brush is designed to give a full-coverage finish. It has a unique paw shape, which allows you to press the product into the skin. In fact, for the best results, follow Queen RiRi's method of pressing the brush into skin, rolling off, and repeating.
Pros
- Unique shape allows for a full-coverage effect
Cons
- Some may prefer a more natural finish
- Works best with liquid formulas
7. It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Complexion Brush
A dual-sided dream brush. The large brush head allows you to sweep foundation over the skin with ease, and the smaller tip means you can go in and cover any redness, blemishes, or dark circles with concealer. I take this foundation brush everywhere with me.
Pros
- Dual-sided to allow for a seamless finish
Cons
- Some might find the larger brush head too big
8. Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Brush
Okay, Hourglass makeup brushes may be on the slightly more expensive side, but for good reason. The bristles on this one are so unbelievably soft, and it sculpts and shapes the facial contours, including around the eyes and nose, with ease. Oh, and it looks super chic while doing so. Little wonder the brand's brushes are Hailey Bieber's go-to.
Pros
- Looks chic
- Super soft bristles
- Hugs the facial contours
Cons
- More expensive
- Larger size for travelling
9. Vieve 117 Foundation Brush
I've found this Vieve brush works to achieve both light and full coverage with liquid, cream, or powder foundation. Because it's domed in shape, it's also perfect for stippling out any cream products on the face, like blushers or bronzers. "I'm such a huge fan of this brush," adds Lindsay. "I feel like I have full control of my foundation when I use it, allowing me to achieve my desired finish every single time."
Pros
- Good for both light and full coverage
- Slightly smaller shape is great for hard-to-reach areas
Cons
- Works better with liquid foundation
