This Beauty Product Is Often Overlooked, But Editors Swear by It for Glowy Skin
Face mists aren't just for the summer. Trust me, the best formulas will keep your skin healthy, hydrated and looking its best year-round. Here are 12 that prove it.

Shannon Lawlor
While to many, a face mist may seem like a surplus product in their skincare routine, ask any beauty editor (myself included), and I can practically guarantee they’ll wax lyrical about the fact that they’d never be without one.
To prove this point, I just glanced across the desks of two fellow editors to take stock of the products currently fanned across their desks: alongside a lip balm and a smattering of exciting new beauty launches, both have a face mist within reaching distance, ready to be spritzed at a moment's notice. Why? Well, the best face mists have the power to not only hydrate the skin, but also soothe, firm, set makeup — the list goes on — as well as provide a refreshing boost for both the mind and body.
It’s for this reason that a face mist is the one beauty product that I find myself reaching for far more than any other. In the summer, it provides a cooling dose of hydration to sun-warmed skin, while during the winter months, a face mist combats the effects wind, rain and central heating can have on your complexion.
Plus, after I have gone through a phase of using face mists religiously, when I fall out of the rhythm, I can't help but notice that my skin lacks a certain glow. While face mists were once little more than a refreshing spritz used to cool our skin down on hot days, now the formulas mean business. They're packed with skin-loving ingredients that deliver radiance and that "lit from within" look.
And let’s not ignore the ease with which a face mist can be applied. Apply to clean skin after cleansing, over makeup or throughout the day for an on-the-go boost. Trust me, there really is no skincare product simpler.
How to Choose a Face Mist
So, how do you choose the right face mist for you? To find that out, I asked consultant dermatologist and skin ageing expert, Dr Sidra Khan.
"Face mists can provide a refreshing boost and short-term hydration, particularly if they contain humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. Some formulations also include soothing ingredients such as thermal water or panthenol, which can calm sensitive or irritated skin," she told me. "[When choosing a face mist] check the ingredient list rather than the marketing. Opt for mists with hydrating and soothing agents, and avoid those high in alcohol or fragrance if your skin is prone to dryness or sensitivity. It’s worth remembering that a mist should complement your routine, not replace your moisturiser or other products."
So, which face mists should we be using? I've created an edit of 12 of my favourite formulas designed to suit a multitude of skin needs. Keep scrolling to see them all...
How I Tested the Best Face Mists
If you haven’t guessed it already, I’m a big fan of a face mist, and so, over the years, I’ve put many formulas to the test. As a result, I’ve discovered what makes a great mist and which ones fail to stand the test of time in my routine. For an insight into what it takes to be dubbed one of the best face mists, here’s what I look for:
- Does my skin feel hydrated after use?
- Does it live up to its skincare claims, whether that’s setting makeup, boosting glow or firming skin?
- Does it apply easily and smoothly?
- Is it a fair price?

Cons
- No additional skincare ingredients
2. Wildsmith Skin Super Energising Treatment Mist
Best for: Energising and hydrating
This energising facial mist is pure magic in a bottle. Infused with hyaluronic acid and calendula, a skin-soothing ingredient, it feels incredibly refreshing on the skin while also working to calm irritation, increase skin cell turnover and smooth fine lines. What I love most about this mist, however, is the scent. Zesty and vibrant, it's the perfect pick-me-up for gloomy mornings and busy days.
Pros
- Uplifting fragrance
- Infused with hydrating hyaluronic acid and skin loving ingredients
Cons
- Glass bottle is not great for travelling
3. By Terry Hyaluronic Glow Setting Mist
Best for: A dewy glow
By Terry's face mist takes a three-pronged approach, hydrating the skin, imparting glow and setting makeup in one single spritz. To do this, it contains a blend of hyaluronic acid, hydrating ceramides and skin-loving probiotics. Alongside this, however, it still feels incredibly lightweight on the skin, making it a joy to wear both over and under makeup.
Pros
- Contains 8 types of hyaluronic acid
- Sets makeup as it hydrates
Cons
- May not suit those who prefer a matte finish
4. Curel Deep Moisture Spray
Best for: Sensitive skin
While many of the mists on this list are great for sensitive skin, this one truly excels. Formulated with hydrating ceramides and calming eucalyptus extract, it deeply nourishes the skin without causing any unwanted irritation. A viral sensation for all the right reasons.
Pros
- Nourishing formula
- Affordable
- Great for sensitive skin
Cons
- Bulky packaging
5. Valmont Primary Veil
Best for: Luxurious misting
If, like me, you're serious about misting, this particular spritz is worth knowing about. Containing both probiotics and prebiotics, this stuff is designed to promote optimum barrier function, making it ideal for those prone to sensitivity. The minute my skin starts reacting to something it doesn't like, a generous misting of this calms it down in seconds.
Pros
- Soothes stressed-out skin
- Packed with skin-loving probiotics
Cons
- Expensive
6. Omorovicza Queen of Hungary Mist
Best for: Relaxation and hydration
No face mist roundup is complete without this stuff. Harnessing the refreshing, healing powers of Hungarian spring water, Queen of Hungary Mist also contains orange blossom, rose and sage waters to boost hydration and suppleness. The best bit? The floral neroli scent provides instant relaxation.
Pros
- Relaxing scent
- Hydrating formula
Cons
- Expensive
7. Elemis Pro-Collagen Toning Mist
Best for: Light plumping and firming
A new launch from Elemis' Pro-collagen range, this toning mist is not only designed to hydrate but also to plump and tone skin over time. It does this through a combination of marine algae and gluconolactone, a gentle exfoliator, which buffs away dead skin cells. It's nourishing, refreshing and leaves skin looking lightly plump and full.
Pros
- Gently exfoliates the skin
- Adds a subtle plumping effect
8. Neutrogena Clear & Soothe Toning Mist
Best for: Blemish-prone skin
Whereas the majority of mists aim to hydrate and nourish, this toning mist is actually perfect for spot-prone skin. For days when my skin is particularly congested but irritated at the same time, a quick spritz of this stuff calms it and helps reduce the appearance of breakouts too.
Pros
- Calms blemishes and prevents future breakouts
- Affordable
Cons
- Not super luxurious packaging
9. Oskia City Life Facial Mist
Best for: Spritzing in the city
When I talk about mists being full of serious skin ingredients, this is what I mean. Oskia's City Life mist contains antioxidant Coenzyme Q10 and astaxanthin for pollution protection as well as general skin superhero niacinamide. It's become an absolute saviour for my stressed-out skin.
Pros
- Designed to protect against the effects of pollution
Cons
- Not everyone will love the addition of vitamin C
10. Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist
Best for: Year-round glow
I use this mist all year round as I can really notice a difference in my skin without it. The formula is infused with botanical oils and hyaluronic acid for a hydrated finish and a dewy glow. The best bit? It can also be used to set your makeup.
Pros
- Contains hyaluronic acid
- Leaves skin looking hydrated and dewy
Cons
- May not suit oily skin types
11. Dermalogica Hyaluronic Ceramide Mist
Best for: Dry skin
Speaking of hydration, this mist is great for when your skin is in need of a little boost. The clever formula helps to strengthen the skin's barrier thanks to four types of hyaluronic acid. It also contains rose water to calm the complexion.
Pros
- Contains 4 types of hyaluronic acid
- Strengthens skin over time
Cons
- May not suit very oily skin types
12. Caudalie Beauty Elixir
Best for: Calming and relaxing
I don't know a single beauty editor who doesn't carry one of these face mists in their bag. Caudalie's refreshing mist not only looks chic, but can be used to prep the skin, refresh the complexion throughout the day and set makeup in place. It's rich in antioxidants so you know it's taking care of your skin, too.
Pros
- Multi-use mist can be used to prime and hydrate
- Infused with nourishing oils
Cons
- Glass bottle isn't suitable for travelling
