As a team of fashion enthusiasts of varying tastes, it's not often that a handful of us will walk into the office wearing literally the same top. Still, despite our team's collective love for the ruched style, I wasn't quite convinced the shirred top trend was for me the first time I laid my eyes on it. While I had owned two shirred mini dresses previously—both from Australian fashion brand to know SIR—I was dubious whether a short version would parlay into my own wardrobe.

As someone with a bigger bust, I didn't think the elastic fabric would sit right across my chest, and I was concerned that the cropped hem would ride up as I move. That was until I was inundated with the number of chic fashion people and cool designers styling the piece.

Of course, it's hard to ignore the popularity of the gathered top, with the piece spotted all over the streets as soon as the sun's out. Endorsements from Olivia Dean, such as a gingham version she wore to Glastonbury in 2023, have certainly helped the style's resurgence. But since the shirred top has become a permanent fixture for British emerging talent, I've been convinced that this style will be the go-to look for the warmer months ahead.

Take Conner Ives, for instance. The American creative director of his eponymous brand has made shirring a staple in his fashion language, earning support from style muses like Camille Charrière, Maya Jama and Meadow Walker as a result. His autumn/winter 2025 collection put a more frosty spin on the piece, styling it with a feather-trimmed butter-yellow trench coat, baseball cap and tights, but given how prevalent this look has been in past seasons, I can guarantee the silhouette will be back again for 2025.
