Experts Agree—These Are the 5 Trendiest Haircuts to Try This Winter

Anyone else feel like switching up their hair whenever a new season kicks in? Earlier this year, I made the big leap into cutting my hair short (for the first time in ten years!) and getting a bob, and I can't recommend it enough. The dramatic change has not only totally changed the way I style my hair, but also the way I dress and do my makeup. If you're feeling in a rut or simply want to try something new, a fresh elegant haircut really can be the answer.

Of course, when it comes to a new haircut there are a multitude of options to choose from, so I decided to go straight to the experts to ask them which trendy winter haircuts are about to be everywhere.

I called upon the expertise of Michael Shaun Corby, Amika education ambassador and hairstylist; Cos Sakkas, two-times British Hairdresser of the Year and TONI&GUY global creative director, and Zoe Adams, celebrity hair stylist at Taylor Taylor London. Below, all three experts shared their haircut trend predictions for winter 2024—whether your hair is long, short, curly, or straight, there's something for everyone.

1. Birkin Bangs

Move over, curtain fringe—this winter is all about Birkin Bangs. "This bold yet wearable fringe is perfect for almost any face shape, offering a solid, statement-making look. Unlike curtain fringes, Birkin Bangs (like the Birkin Bag) are the focal point of the hairstyle without the high-maintenance efforts of other cuts," says Corby. "The look effortlessly blends into soft, textured layers, whether your hair is extra-long, medium, or bobbed, giving you versatility with every length."

Corby says that it's vital that the cut is heavier on the outer edges, but softly blended toward the middle, where it stops just above the nose or eyebrows. "The sides should be gently blended using a mix of point and slide cutting from the cheekbone down to maintain softness."

2. The Curly Bob

For all the curly girls out there wanting to go short, say hello to the curly bob. "The cloud curl trend is evolving into a shorter, sassier version for winter, with the return of the ‘80s curly bob," says Corby. "This cut embraces a deep side part and some subtle undercutting for shape and attitude. It’s perfect for those who want to keep the softness of long curls but with more edge and volume."

To avoid common mistakes with curly haircuts, Corby advises requesting that your stylist cut your hair dry. "The shape should be organic and not overly precise," he explains. "Keeping texture close to the scalp and through the mid-lengths will prevent frizzy ends and keep the curls defined."

3. '90s Layered Blowout

According to Sakkas, party season hair this year is all about long layers, bounce, and plenty of volume. “The big sexy 90s hair is a follow on from the summer’s supermodel cut –and the next step is a big bouncy 90’s bombshell blow-out," he says. "It’s super feminine, super cute and really suits hair as we step out of that beachy, summer boho vibe."

Ask your hairstylist for long, face-framing layers which will add a sense of movement and make it easier for you to style a blown-out, bouncy look. When it comes to styling, Sakkas recommends applying volume mousse to the hair and then blasting dry it with the hairdryer upside down for volume through the roots. "Then add on large Velcro rollers and let it set while you’re getting ready. Next, take out the rollers for automatic bounce and volume. Finally, use tongs for added movement around the face.”

4. The Butterfly Cut

"The butterfly cut is a fresh, modern style with soft, fluttery layers that give it a carefree, retro feel—like a hairstyle ready to hit a ’70s disco," says Corby. "This style is less about sharp edges and more about movement and texture, making it the perfect low-maintenance, high-impact look."

"The foundation is a slightly longer bob with textured, fluttering layers," he adds. "Ask your stylist to point-cut or razor the ends to remove bulk, creating the desired movement. The key is to leave spaces between the layers for a light, airy effect—like butterfly wings."

5. The Shag

Another super-cool, trendy winter haircut comes in the form of the shag haircut. "As we come to the end of the ubiquitous beach wave for summer we are seeing a stronger move to the shag inspired looks which can be worn above and below the collarbone and are particularly great for curly girls," says Adams.

When it comes to styling, Adams advises those with straighter hair to create this slightly grungier look by creating an S-wave with your straighteners rather than using a classic curling tong.
