There’s nothing like the feeling of getting your hair freshly highlighted, cut, and blow-dried to smooth, silky perfection. It’s a major confidence booster and makes me feel on top of the world. After my most recent appointment at Rita Hazan’s Upper East Side salon, I strutted out onto the street truly feeling like a supermodel. I mean, it’s kind of hard not to feel this way when my hair had just been done by the same woman who does Beyoncé’s hair.
Rita Hazan discovered her passion for hair at a young age and decided to make a career out of it. At 17, she enrolled in beauty school, and after mastering styling, she realized she was most passionate about color. Her goal was to work for Oribe after graduating, and to no one’s surprise, she landed the gig and worked under the brand’s master colorist for more than five years. This is where she learned to color natural and textured hair types. "No one could get these hair types light without it turning brassy. That became my specialty,” she says. This helped Hazan build her celeb clientele early on. Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez were a couple of the first, and now, she has added Beyoncé, Sydney Sweeney, and Jessica Simpson, among others, to her roster.
Since I was lucky enough to have my hair done by Hazan herself, I took advantage and asked her to share her tips for prolonging my hair color. "Healthy hair keeps color longer,” she says. No matter how strong you think your hair is, it can only take so much color and heat. "Don’t overprocess your hair,” she cautions.
Well, if you’re like me and have a history of bleaching and highlighting your hair, then you should absolutely apply an intense hydrating mask specifically for color-treated hair. Hazan recommends the Weekly Remedy Treatment ($42) from her eponymous haircare line. It’s a two-step treatment that works from the inside out to repair and strengthen hair, keeping it frizz-free, glossy, and, well, flawless. Keep reading to see the rest of Hazan’s top products, including her personal haircare must-haves and everyday makeup and skincare picks.
"This product is one that I’m so proud of! I created it in 2011, and it took me four years to create the formula for this shade. I wanted it to be the perfect universal light-to-medium brown. A little goes a long way, and it has very buildable coverage. It’s a lifesaver to cover gray roots in between salon visits, and you can also use it to blend your hair with extensions and to make the hairline appear fuller and thicker. The best part is that it stays put until you shampoo it out.”
"After I wash my face, I always use these pads. They’ve really brightened and evened out my skin tone. I don’t have a ton of dark spots because I try to keep my face out of the sun, but the few I had have become increasingly lighter with twice-daily use of these pads.”
"This is my holy-grail skincare product. It’s pricey, but it’s worth it! I’ve been using it for a very long time. La Mer has many types of face creams, but the original Moisturizing Cream is my go-to—it’s so rich in texture and feels so smooth. My skin always feels firmer and looks healthier with consistent use of this cream.”
"Brows are so important to me because it really shapes the face. Tweezerman makes the best tweezer with the perfect precision point. My makeup artist Sandy Linter always cleans up my brows for me, and she uses the scissors to trim and keep them looking clean. I never wax. I only tweeze my brows, so this is my go-to brow tool.”
"This is my signature scent. It’s a dark and spicy floral fragrance, which I love wearing for a party or formal event. It’s also great to wear on a date night out with my husband. It has notes of tuberose, bergamot, and white musk. It smells delicious!”
"I love dark nail polish. I always have. I never wear light colors because I work every day with hair color, which can stain the nails. Sometimes, I will do red, but my favorite nail polish is Lincoln Park After Dark by OPI. I love that it’s a dark eggplant purple that looks almost black on the nail.”
"This is one of my favorite products to use at home to maintain your hair color because it brightens and illuminates blonde hair and highlights. I use this in the shower after I wash my hair at least two to three times a week. It makes my hair so shiny and prevents color fading and dullness.”
"I love the coconut scent of this body cream. It reminds me of vacation! I apply it all over after I exfoliate my skin. I actually discovered this product fairly recently because I was looking for something to make my skin feel and look tighter, and it’s quickly become a must in my routine.”
