We Tested 30+ of the "Best" Long-Lasting Lipsticks—These Are the 10 That Truly Didn't Budge
They pass the test.

Shawna Hudson
I don’t know about you, but there’s some sort of magic in a perfectly etched lipstick job that makes me wish it could last forever and ever. While I’ve yet to find the magic formula that can stay planted on my lips until the end of time (I’m a civilized beauty editor—I wash my face at night!), I have tested my fair share of lipsticks that promise long-lasting wear. Whether or not they actually deliver is the million-dollar question, but luckily, we at Who What Wear have done the testing for you.
“A great long-lasting lipstick should glide on easily, deliver strong pigment, and feel comfortable for hours,” says celebrity makeup artist Daisy Toye. “It’s all about the formula—long-wear lipsticks typically include film-forming agents that help pigment adhere to the lips. The texture plays a role too: matte and satin finishes grip better than creamy ones,” she adds. But the MUA stresses the importance of proper prep to squeeze the most wear out of your lippie (more on that later).
Below, the best long-wear lipsticks with impressive staying power, high-impact pigment, and a comfortable feel, as approved by editors and celebrity makeup artists.
The Best Long-Lasting Lipsticks, at a Glance
- Best Overall: Dior Rouge Dior Forever Liquid Lacquer
- Best Matte: Valentino Spike Valentino Buttery Matte Lipstick
- Best Budget: Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick
- Best for Mature Lips: Nars Powermatte Long-Lasting Lipstick
- Best Red: Violette_FR Petal Bouche Matte Liquid Lipstick
Best Overall: Dior Rouge Dior Forever Liquid Lacquer
Pros: Ultra-pigmented, transfer-proof, glossy finish
Cons: On the expensive side
Shades: 7 | Finish: Glossy | Wear time: Up to 12 hours
When it comes to top-notch, no-budge formulas, the pros turn to Dior. Celebrity makeup artist J. Guerra calls this lippie one of his "all-time favorite liquid lipsticks,” for its stay-put formula that locks into place without feeling stiff or dry. “It doesn’t transfer and is ultra pigmented. The matte texture doesn’t fade or settle into fine lines and feels comfortable all day,” he adds. But perhaps the most elevated aspect of this formula, despite its chic packaging, is its bi-phase formula that offers 12 hours of plumping and hydration—preventing the dry, cracked lips we associate with the liquid lipsticks of yore.
Customer review: “I’m mesmerized with the performance of these forever liquid lacquers. I went filming 6 hours drinking fluids, eating, and the product didn’t fade, didn't transfer, the high shine was intact, didn’t accentuate lip lines. What you did to us!!! It’s the most efficient and high-performance product created. Definitely a game changer. Well done!!! Got the other 4 shades.”
Best Matte: Valentino Spike Valentino Buttery Matte Lipstick
Pros: Weightless feel, hydrating formula, comfortable wear
Cons: Relatively small amount of product
Shades: 14 | Finish: Matte, shimmer | Wear time: Up to 10 hours
I’ve tried several matte lipsticks in my career as a beauty editor, but nothing beats the comfort and staying power of Valentino’s Spike lipsticks. It’s available in an array of shades, from holiday reds to everyday mauves, and its featherlight formula is so deceivingly hydrating that I forget I have anything on at all, much less a matte lip. It’s infused with cotton oil extract, a bespoke light-reflecting complex, and 12% pigment concentration for deeper color with fewer strokes. Not to mention that I recently braved the NYC rain sans umbrella, ate dinner, and drank water all while wearing this lip (approximately five hours total), and the center didn’t even fade. That’s longevity if I’ve ever seen it.
Customer review: “Absolutely obsessing over this gorgeous spike buttery matte lipstick. This is a true matte that feels amazing on the lips. Matte yet hydrating is a great feat to accomplish, and Valentino does it with this one. The pigment on this lippie is absolutely amazing with a creamy texture that feels amazing on. It has a great staying power, only needing to be reapplied for me after meals, but otherwise staying out and pretty. If you love a pretty lippie that is going to always show up for you, this one is it.”

Best Budget: Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick
Pros: Low-priced, highly pigmented, smear- and smudge-resistant
Cons: Can be a bit drying on the lips
Shades: 28 | Finish: Matte | Wear time: Up to 16 hours
If you’re looking for something with staying power in the drugstore beauty aisle, this budget-friendly matte lipstick is for you. Beloved by editors for its kiss-proof formula and packed with color that won’t fade for up to 16 hours of wear. Our editors can attest to its impressive longevity, with minimal mess after drinking and eating thanks to its matte finish that keeps things locked in place (and never on your teeth).
Customer review: “I have been using this lipstick for 5 years now, so I figured it's about time to leave a review. And I've got a lot to say since I've used it for so long and have tried multiple shades, coming back to the reviews every time I want to try a new color (photos can be so helpful!) Quite frankly, I love them! I can't say this enough! I can eat, drink, kiss, sleep, even SHOWER with this lipstick on and it doesn't come off!”

Best for Mature Lips: Nars Powermatte Long-Lasting Lipstick
Pros: Lightweight texture, comfortable feel, transfer-free formula
Cons: Color may be too bold for soft-focus lipstick lovers
Shades: 17 | Finish: Matte | Wear time: 10 hours
There’s no age limit on stay-put lipstick, and this comfortable matte lipstick is one of Toye’s top recommendations for those with mature skin. “For mature lips, comfort is key,” says Toye. The MUA loves this Nars lipstick for its feather-free formula that offers high-intensity color payoff in just one swipe and transfer-free wear to keep your coffee mugs, teeth, and skin rouge-free. She appreciates this resilient formula for its “smooth, flexible finish that won’t settle into lines” and cream-to-matte formula that feels comfortable and looks oh so flattering on mature lips.
Customer review: “This lipstick is fantastic! It applies smoothly, has great pigmentation, and feels comfortable on the lips. The color payoff is rich and vibrant, and it lasts for hours without fading. Definitely a great choice for long-wearing, beautiful lips!”
Best Red: Violette_FR Petal Bouche Matte Liquid Lipstick
Pros: High pigment payoff, stays comfortable throughout the day, weightless formula
Cons: Can be drying on the lips
Shades: 3 | Finish: Matte | Wear time: Approx. 8 hours
Suffice it to say, the French (especially iconic makeup artist Violette) know a thing or two about an effortlessly chic red lip. The entire Who What Wear beauty team has nothing but good things to say about the Petal Bouche, and this delicious apple-red shade is a staple in our collections. It’s extremely pigmented yet easy to blur with a finger to achieve that effortless French-girl lip, and it truly does not budge for hours. Though it doesn’t claim to be a long-lasting lipstick, this formula has gotten us through eight-hour workdays and counting, so it’s earned a spot on our list.
Customer review: “I have been on a search for years for a matte lipstick that really lasted as long as advertised. Strange [that] it took one not advertised as long-lasting to beat out Mac and Smashbox to name a few. Additionally, I normally choose a more berry/burgundy color, took a chance on Amour Fou, and have gotten so many unsolicited compliments… Best of all, I am not one of those people who is always looking in the mirror, so imagine my surprise at the end of the workday to find my lipstick was still there! Gotta love it!”
Best Glossy: MAC Cosmetics Lustreglass Sheer-Shine Lipstick
Pros: Balm-like texture, hydrating ingredients, stay-put formula
Cons: May feel less long-wearing to matte-lip lovers
Shades: 14 | Finish: Glossy | Wear time: Up to 8 hours
One of Toye’s go-to long-wearing lipsticks is MAC’s Lustreglass Sheer-Shine Lipstick for its “buildable, creamy wash of color that still lasts beautifully.” While it feels like a rule of thumb that most lipsticks with longevity need to be matte (or at least velvet), this shiny lipstick offers some impressive staying power and high-impact color. Plus, the formula is infused with a bevy of nourishing plant oils, shea butter, and hyaluronic acid to soothe and smooth the lips.
Customer review: “I absolutely love this MAC lipstick! It has quickly become a favorite in my makeup routine for so many reasons. The formula is incredibly creamy, gliding on effortlessly and feeling luxurious on my lips without ever drying them out… Best of all, it stays on all day, even through meals and drinks, which is a game-changer for me. The color remains vibrant and flawless, leaving my lips looking stunning. I'll definitely be purchasing this lipstick again, and I'd wholeheartedly recommend it to any of my friends!”
Best Velvet: Gucci Velvet Matte Lipstick
Pros: Comfortable wear, impressive pigment, non-drying formula
Cons: Quite expensive
Shades: 18 | Finish: Velvet | Wear time: Approx. 8 hours
When I want a lipstick that’s not totally matte and will sustain an all-day marathon of brand events and work, I reach for Gucci’s Velvet Matte Lipstick. This soft, comfortable lipstick packs major pigment while gliding on smoothly thanks to its oil-infused formula that feels butter-soft on the skin and is surprisingly non-drying. Because this lipstick is so lightweight, I decided that this was the only red lippie I would pack on a trip to Paris, France—which says a lot, if you know anything about the French and their red pouts. It’s on the pricey side because everything about this formula screams “rich.”
Customer review: “This is my all-time favorite matte lipstick formula, and I've slowly been accumulating different shades. It's velvety smooth on the lips, comfortable to wear all day, and lasts surprisingly long considering it's not technically a long-wear formula. Even the bright shades last great throughout the day with only minor touch-ups needed.”

Best Drugstore: Nyx Professional Makeup Lip Lingerie XXL Matte Liquid Lipstick
Pros: Exceptional staying power, transfer-resistant, budget-friendly
Cons: Formula is potentially dehydrating
Shades: 31 | Finish: Matte | Wear time: Up to 16 hours
This is WWW editors’ favorite drugstore lipstick ever. It boasts up to 16 hours of wear (that’s two whole workdays!) with promises of not cracking, fading, or transferring within that time. Though I doubt anyone will be stamping a lip on their faces for that long, this no-budge liquid lipstick is in it for the long haul with its impressive staying power and ultra-pigmented formula. Plus, it’s only $11 when you purchase it at full price, which makes this lippie even more of a steal when you snag it on sale. (Cough cough, it’s only $9 right now.)
Customer review: “Bought this after reading about it online, it lasts for so much longer than I was expecting. It has a nice, cosmetic scent, applying [it] feels amazing, it glides right on. After it dries, it does not budge unless you apply something over it. It is very pigmented, absolutely recommend, it is also a big size for its price, so I am certain that it will last forever.”

Best Cream: Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Cream Lipstick
Pros: Hydrating formula, serious staying lasting power, won’t feather
Cons: TBH, there’s nothing we don’t love
Shades: 6 | Finish: Satin | Wear time: Up to 18 hours
Another lipstick that Toye recommends is Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge, a cream formula that is both hydrating, great for mature skin, and surprisingly long-wearing. Despite its comforting texture, which is kissed with rose balm and hyaluronic acid for hydration, this lipstick offers up to 18 hours of wear and pretty color that won’t bleed or smudge as the hours pass by. If you ask Toye and me, this is the perfect everyday lipstick for busy beauty lovers who don’t have time to reapply.
Customer review: “Amazing combination of lasting power and comfort! It is so hard to find a combination of both. Long-lasting types can be dry and unnatural-looking. This is the perfect combination of both.”
Best Satin: Gucci Long Lasting Satin Lipstick
Pros: Comfortable wear, pretty shade range, rich color
Cons: Quite pricey, not transfer-proof
Shades: 36 | Finish: Satin | Wear time: Approx. 6 hours
Guerra recommends this satin tube for those who want something long-lasting without the often-drying effects of matte lipstick. "This creamy, color-rich lipstick leaves a satin finish that stays comfortable and lasts all day,” says Guerra. It’s infused with moisturizing oils that keep the lips silky without making the color slide and offers long stretches of wear time with each swipe. Because the formula is medium coverage, it’s easy to start sheer and work your way up to a bolder look with extra swipes, making this a bit more customizable than the rest we’ve listed. Plus, the formula is free from several harmful ingredients, including parabens, sulfates, formaldehydes, and more.
Customer review: “I absolutely loved this lipstick. The formula was great, I love the consistency of it. Application was incredibly easy, due to the formula. The color was very long-wearing, I could wear this for a full night without having to reapply! I cannot recommend enough.”
What to Look for in a Long-Lasting Lipstick
- Formula: “I look for a formula that’s transfer-resistant but not drying—something that moves with the lips,” says Toye. “A slightly satin or soft-matte finish tends to last longest while keeping lips hydrated.” With so many matte variants changing the lipstick landscape, it’s no longer a struggle to come across a long-wearing formula that feels comfortable and moisturizes the lips without smearing, smudging, or getting on your teeth throughout the day.
- Pigmentation: Formulas with a high pigment payoff are also ideal for all-day wear. For the least number of touch-ups, you'll want something super saturated that can withstand eating, drinking, and other daily activities.
- Texture: As aforementioned, a comfortable texture is paramount for lipstick in general, but this is often an abandoned characteristic in the pursuit of long-wearing lipstick. This often comes down to the finish and ingredients used to achieve said texture, but it’s important to keep your preference of matte versus satin, liquid lipstick versus stick lipstick, and more top of mind when shopping.
How Can You Extend the Wear Time of Your Regular Lipstick?
Though the best way to score a semi-permanent pout is by using a long-lasting lipstick, you can extend the life of your paint job with a bit of technique. “Start by lining the lips fully with a lip liner to create a base. Apply the lipstick, blot, then add a second thin layer for extra staying power,” says Toye. Have a wedding, long night, or anything glamorous ahead of you that requires a stay-put lip? Toye suggests one more step. “A light dusting of translucent powder through a tissue helps lock everything in without dulling the color,” she recommends.
Which Long-Lasting Lipstick Would You Recommend for Mature Lips?
While Toye has a few tubes to recommend, she recommends avoiding formulas that are “too matte” or drying. “Opt for soft-matte or satin textures instead,” she muses. She’s quick to suggest the Nars Powermatte Long-Lasting Lipstick and Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Cream Lipstick for those with mature lips, as these two tubes meet her expectations in two different finishes (matte and satin).
How Should You Prep Your Lips Before Applying a Long-Lasting Lipstick?
If you want to really prolong the wear of your lipstick, Toye says that the process should start well before the stick hits your lips. “Proper prep and layering techniques can make a big difference in longevity,” Toye explains. “Exfoliate gently with a lip scrub or damp washcloth to remove any dry skin. Follow with a light, hydrating balm and let it sink in before applying color. This creates a smooth canvas and helps lipstick apply evenly and stay fresh longer.”
How We Chose
To find the best long-wearing lipsticks on the market, Who What Wear editors tested their own tubes and consulted celebrity makeup artists to see which formulas withstood the test of time. We took into consideration a variety of skin types and tones, keeping age top of mind while diversifying our textures and finishes—trying a range of liquid lipsticks, cream finishes, matte textures, and more. From there, we wore our lipsticks on long days, in rainstorms, while eating (the list goes on) to see which ones really had the staying power. Above, our list of winners.
