We might be nearing the start of autumn, but I've just spotted a fresh summer trend breaking through just in time for the last moments of good weather. As a challenger to all of the jorts content swirling around, this season, some brave fashion people are backing a shorter shorts trend that makes dressing for hot weather much more fun. Finishing off their outfits with a "controversial" pair of hot pants, the style set is playing with proportions in the chicest ways.
Naturally, model and presenter Alexa Chung is an early pioneer of the trend, wearing a pair of crochet hotpants on a recent boat trip. The fashion icon dressed them up in a low-key way that made them feel surprisingly wearable. Styling her bum-skimming shorts with a classic grey cashmere knit, Chung proved she can make the trickiest of trends that little bit easier to consider.
Taking a different approach to styling the shorts, actor Daisy Edgar-Jones was recently spotted in New York wearing black hot pants with a burgundy leather jacket and chunky loafers—all Gucci, of course. Her leather layers added a cool-girl edge to her shorts outfit and spoke to the unexpected versatility of the emerging hot pants trend.
With a hemline that cuts off at the top of the thighs (or perhaps even higher), these micro shorts have long been deemed "controversial" thanks to their minuscule coverage, and they're certainly not for the faint-hearted (in some instances, we're basically talking about pants). But whilst hot pants might be a no-go for many, certain stylish dressers have shown that when balanced out with a boxy layer or a roomy knit, they don't seem so scary.
