30 Black-Tie Wedding Guest Dresses Currently Sitting in My Cart That Ace the Dress Code

With a few weddings on my calendar, I've already been thinking about the looks I'll be wearing. One of the celebrations I'll be attending has a black-tie dress code, which is a welcome excuse to bring out all of the stops and wear a dressed-up look that goes outside of my regular outfits. Less formal than white tie, black-tie attire for women is the most common formal dress code for events, which typically translates to floor-length evening gowns but can also include formal cocktail dresses and elegant suiting.
I've been scouring the latest drops from designers to figure out the piece I'll be wearing and have some front-runners, from a sculptural maxi from Christopher Esber to a strapless douppioni dress from Toteme to an open-back design from Proenza Schouler. There are many more contenders, though. Ahead, see the black-tie wedding guest dresses that are currently on my short list, but first, let's set some ground rules.
Rule #1: Black Tie Does Not Equal Boring
Seeing black tie on the dress code doesn't mean you actually have to wear black or just put on a dress that is understated and minimal if that's not your personal style. It's formal, but it still leaves room for experimentation. While floor-length gowns are often the go-to, playful details like ruffles, sequins, and halter necklines are fair game.
Rule #2: Context Is Everything
I've been to black-tie weddings where cutouts, leg slits, and low necklines would likely not be appreciated by the couple, but I've also attended black-tie events in New York City where everyone is dressed as daring as possible. You don't necessarily have to ask the host, but you should read context clues. If their traditional grandparent is on the guest list, maybe they wouldn't understand the cutout trend, so play modest. Of course, if it's a fashion event, there are no rules. Bonus tip: The venue can also help determine how to handle this conundrum. If you're going to a Catholic church, that might inspire modest attire, but if the event is hosted at a nightclub, have some fun with it.
Rule #3: Accessories Can Define the Look
I own a classic black slip dress that I've styled with flip-flops and a shoulder bag for a casual dinner one day and paired with high heels and a clutch the next. The dress fit right into both occasions perfectly. Accessories can really make or break whether something is truly considered black-tie appropriate. I'd style some of the dresses below for so many different levels of formality, so let your accessories do the work here. You'll be surprised at what you can do with what's already in your closet.
