My Last Derm Appointment Had Me Sprinting to Find SPF Lip Balm—10 I've Already Added to Cart
Protect your pout.

Kaitlyn McLintock
Any dermatologist or aesthetician will tell you that the lips are one of the most overlooked areas for sun protection. When you don't protect the delicate skin on your lips, you increase the chance of serious UV damage that could result in premature signs of aging, like discoloration, lines, wrinkles, or worse. I found this out the hard way—through a few too many sunburns that left my lips cracking and a dermatologist who sounded the alarm bell.
As someone who experienced an acne-free adolescence, I didn’t book my first derm appointment until I was 23 years old. (It was for annual skin checks—felt like the mature thing to do.) Though I received high marks for a couple of years, my most recent visit resulted in the news that I have (gasp!) sun damage on my lips.
As if on autopilot, I dumped every normal lip gloss from my dozens of purses and stretched my hands to the heavens (emailed my expert contacts) to see which formulas I should be reaching for instead. “I always recommend looking for an SPF product that offers broad-spectrum sun protection, which means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays,” Sheila Farhang, MD, told me. “Additional benefits such as hydration or plumping are also great!”
Buzzwords like octinoxate and glycerin swarming in my head, I hit the ground running to swap my high-performance lip glosses for SPF-protected formulas, and I found some serious keepers along the way. Below, 10 SPF lip balms trusted by dermatologists and editors alike.
The Best SPF Lip Balms, at a Glance
- Best Overall: Coola Organic Liplux Classic Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30
- Best Budget: Sun Bum Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30
- Best Protection: Ultra Violette Sheen Screen SPF 50 Hydrating Sunscreen Lip Balm
- Best Gloss: Supergoop! Glow Gloss SPF 40 Lip Balm
- Best Tinted: MDSolarSciences Hydrating Sheer Lip Balm SPF 30
Best Overall: Coola Organic Liplux Classic Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30
Pros: Lightweight, no white cast, moisturizing
Cons: Honestly? None!
SPF: 30 | Type: Chemical | Shades: 2 | Key ingredients: Octisalate, cupuaçu butter, jojoba seed oil
The one SPF lip balm that never leaves my beach bag is this nourishing stick from Coola. The broad-spectrum SPF 30 in this formula protects your lips from persistent UV rays and is resistant to water for up to 80 minutes, making this my go-to when spending a day at the beach or pool. (Plus, it’s outfitted in metal packaging that keeps the product from melting in the hot sun.) I have perennially dry lips, and the formula’s lush array of organic natural fruit butters provides all-day comfort—and when I remember to use it, my lips are always spared from the sun’s revenge.
Customer review: “This product has been a godsend to me. As an African American woman, I had what was called ‘smoker lips,’ where they were discolored. I don't smoke, but I was causing damage to my lips by just wearing Vaseline or lip balm outside in the sun. The dark spots were actually sun spots, and [they] used to make me self-conscious about my lips. I started using this after reading that SPF can help reverse this, and boy, did it work! My lips are going back to their original color and I am getting more confident in my smile. The sun spots are fading, and this is after a couple of uses. This stuff really does protect your lips!”
Best Budget: Sun Bum Sunscreen Lip Balm SPF 30
Pros: Wallet-friendly price, fun fragrances, hydrating formula
Cons: Has a chemical taste
SPF: 30 | Type: Chemical | Shades: 1 | Key ingredients: Octinoxate, aloe, vitamin E
A drugstore classic, this SPF lip balm comes in a variety of scents to fit your summer beauty aesthetic. One quick swipe along your lips leaves you with a wash of hydration, courtesy of nourishing aloe and vitamin E, and ample protection thanks to its outdoor activity–appropriate SPF 30 rating. While some customers complain about its sunscreen-y taste, I find the price point and effective protection to be worth the mild flavor.
Customer review: “IDK why I waited so long to try this SPF chapstick. It's smooth, melts into the lips, and [is] not gritty like other SPF chapsticks. Doesn't provide any color, so I use it as a daily base product, then use a colored SPF gloss on top.”
Best Protection: Ultra Violette Sheen Screen SPF 50 Hydrating Sunscreen Lip Balm
Pros: Supremely hydrating, highest SPF on list, cute colors
Cons: Slightly pricey
SPF: 50 | Type: Chemical | Shades: 2 | Key ingredients: Octinoxate, lanolin, cocoa butter, vitamin E
We’re big fans of Ultra Violette’s Australian sunscreen, and the brand’s ultra-nourishing (forgive the pun) lip SPF is no exception. This lip balm has the highest SPF rating of any formula on this list (50, clock it!), coating the lips in a layer of strong protection while hydrating lanolin, cocoa butter, and vitamin E comfort the skin. Non-sticky and pinched with color, this is the perfect everyday lippie if you value optimal sun protection.
Customer review: “I did a lot of research before coming to the decision to buy this one, and I’m so glad I did! I wanted the highest SPF available, something that wasn’t an oil, didn’t have a strong chemical taste, no white cast, deeply hydrating balm texture, but not too heavy or sticky, with a good scent and flavor. This met every expectation. Worth every penny, and I will be repurchasing when it runs out.”
Best Gloss: Supergoop! Glow Gloss SPF 40 Lip Balm
Pros: Hydrating formula, glassy finish, plays nicely with lip makeup
Cons: No clear shade
SPF: 40 | Type: Chemical | Shades: 3 | Key ingredients: Octocrylene, shea butter, peptide complex
Supergoop has long made some of my very favorite sunscreen products to date (in fact, its famed Glowscreen is Who What Wear’s top recommendation for tinted sunscreen), so it’s no surprise that I also found favor with its new glossy lip balm. I don’t like my products to forgo performance in the pursuit of effectiveness, so I loved that this hydrating, silky-smooth formula felt just as good on my lips as it looked—its tinted hues delivering pretty color that didn’t make my lip liner slide off when shielding my lips on steamy summer days. While some might lament its lack of a clear shade, you can nab the very similar Supergoop Lipscreen (also with SPF 40!) for a colorless glaze.
Customer review: “If you're looking for a sunblock that protects your lips without the gross taste of sunblock, you'll love this lip gloss. The vanilla flavor is comforting, and I feel happy knowing that my lips are protected. Having had sun damage and discoloration around my lips, I was told by a dermatologist to protect my lips with sunblock, and this is a tasty solution!”
Best Tinted: MDSolarSciences Hydrating Sheer Lip Balm SPF 30
Pros: Buildable color, deeply hydrating, improves plumpness and firmness
Cons: Reviewers say it can break or get stuck in the tube.
SPF: 30 | Type: Chemical | Shades: 7 | Key ingredients: Octisalate, shea butter, avocado oil, vitamin C
To put it plainly, these tinted SPF lip balms are so pretty. Each tube is engineered with sheer, buildable pigment that can be layered for a bolder look or swiped for a just-kissed flush, while SPF ensures they're protected all day. But aside from helping your lips look good, this formula also works hard to deeply treat the skin with a nourishing concoction of shea butter, avocado oil, and vitamins E and C. Each ingredient helps plump, soften, and stimulate the skin—what more could you ask for from a skincare-makeup hybrid?
Customer review: "The color is lovely, it applies smoothly, it's moisturizing, and it protects against UV rays. It's the total package!"
Best Mineral: Kopari Lip Love Moisture Balm
Pros: No chemical taste, doubles as lip gloss, pretty shade range
Cons: On the pricey side
SPF: 30 | Type: Mineral | Shades: 4 (1 non-SPF) | Key ingredients: Ceramides, shea butter, mango butter, vitamin E
Though mineral sunscreens are some of my fellow beauty editors' and my favorites to use on our faces, it’s a surprisingly hard formula to find in lippie form. That was, until the Kopari Moisture Balm fell into my lap. Makeup fans and those who hate chemical tastes (ahem, everyone) will appreciate this glossy, sweet-tasting formula for its potent color payoff and SPF 30 rating, which offers enough protection for outdoor activity while glazing the lips in a glassy finish.
Customer review: “The Kopari Lip Moisture Balm with SPF is a beach bag essential for me now. It feels super smooth going on, like buttery soft, but not sticky at all. I love that it gives my lips a glossy finish and protects them with SPF, which is such a bonus. The scent is subtle and sweet, not overpowering, and it keeps my lips feeling hydrated for hours. It’s the kind of balm I throw in every bag because it does everything I need in one little tube.”
Best Lip Oil: Vacation SPF 30 Chardonnay Lip Oil
Pros: Deeply nourishing, trendy formula, non-sticky feel
Cons: Scent may be too strong for sensitive noses
SPF: 30 | Type: Chemical | Shades: 1 | Key ingredients: Chardonnay grape seed oil, hyaluronic acid, peptides
Lip oils have never been trendier, but the one thing most of these glassy elixirs lack is any sort of sun protection. To moisturize your kissers and shield them from the sun, Vacation created this shopper-loved oil formula packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid, a handful of plant seed oils, and SPF 30. Many customers rave about its slick finish, non-sticky formula, and plumping powers, but some remarked an unsatisfactory smell. If you have a sensitive nose, you might want to try this one in-store first.
Customer review: “Got this for my sister and she loves it! She’s a lip gloss addict and I got it for her so her lips don’t burn at the beach. She loves the feel, protection, even the taste!”
Best Hydrating: SunSolveMD LipidRestore Volumize + Condition SPF 40
Pros: High SPF content, featherlight feel, precise applicator
Cons: Only one tinted shade
SPF: 40 | Type: Mineral | Shades: 1 | Key ingredients: Zinc oxide, bergamot orange oil, squalane
As someone with chronically dry lips, I know your pout needs extra protection when it’s chapped, making deep conditioning treatments like the SunSolveMD LipidRestore a great option if the above sounds like you. This tinted formula is the lightest I’ve tried yet (I tend to forget I’m wearing anything at all when it’s on), and its oil-rich makeup leaves my lips feeling nourished within minutes. Plus, it comes in a pretty nude-pink shade that flatters most skin tones.
Customer review: “It’s a beautiful product and I would definitely recommend it. It’s not scented, and hey, how many times does your lip balm/lip gloss has SPF??? The packaging is very pretty and appealing, it nourishes your lips and makes them look luscious all the while protecting them from the adverse effects of the sun. I really liked the texture, it’s not [a] very thick consistency but it stays on your lips for a long time.”
Best Fragrance-Free: EltaMD UV Lip Balm Sunscreen
Pros: Fragrance-free, non-irritating, antioxidant-rich
Cons: Reviewers say it can be hard to squeeze the product out of the tube.
SPF: 36 | Type: Hybrid | Shades: 1 | Key ingredients: Zinc oxide, glycerin, vitamin C
Equally as soothing as it is protective, this lip balm is fortified with glycerin, vitamins C and E, and a handful of other hydrating ingredients that effectively nourish and seal the lips. This deeply moisturizing lip balm contains SPF 36 by way of a hybrid formula, including mineral (zinc oxide) and chemical (octinoxate) ingredients that ensure optimal coverage and protection. Beauty editor Kaitlyn McLintock even called this tube her “go-to fragrance-free option” when her lips feel especially dry or sensitive.
Customer review: "This is an affordable, nourishing, and lasting lip balm that also provides great protection from the sun. Highly recommended for those with sensitive skin and those with melanin-rich skin."
Best for the Beach: Supergoop! Play Lip Shield SPF 30
Pros: Resistant to sweat and water, conditioning, easy-to-pack tube
Cons: Tastes like sunscreen
SPF: 30 | Type: Chemical | Shades: 1 | Key ingredients: Octocrylene, coconut oil, sunflower seed oil
If you’re a surfer, beach volleyballer, skier, mermaids player (need I go on?), you’re going to need something heavy duty to withstand your sun-worshipping antics. This SPF 30 balm from Supergoop is infused with lip-loving ingredients like coconut, sunflower seed, and avocado oils, ensuring comfortable wear with each glide, but it’s also resistant to water, so you can play hard now without your skin paying for it later. I especially love the fact that it comes in a flat tube, so it can sit flush inside your pocket or slip easily into a thin fanny pack during your outdoor adventures.
Customer review: “I really dislike sunscreen lip balms that are fruity and sweet, and my lips get irritated by minty lip products. My lips are sensitive; I also can't easily tolerate lip products with Octyldodecanol or Phenoxyethanol (they both make my lips painfully swollen and crusty). Thankfully, the Coconut version of this lip balm is mild and not too sweet, and the formula so far has been non-irritating enough to use regularly. The formula is just right--smooth and firm enough to feel protective without being heavy or stiff. It's also not oily or too creamy, and it is invisible, so lipstick layers well with it. I like the oval shape for more precise application, too. I'm so glad that I found this and hope that the formula remains gentle!”
What Is the Best SPF for Lip Balm?
SPF, or sun protection factor, can be found in products with ratings from 2 to 100. This determines how much of the sun’s rays are protected from your skin. For example, SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, according to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and an article from Northwestern Medicine states that SPF 50 blocks up to 98%. But since the skin on your lips is some of the thinnest, it’s not advisable to go any lower than 15.
“For every day, I usually recommend at least 15,” says Farhang. “If out in the direct sunlight all day and sweating or doing water activities, SPF 30 or higher may be better,” she adds. However, she strongly advises you to reapply every two hours for optimal protection.
What Lip Sunscreens Do Dermatologists Recommend?
While many of our picks above are dermatologist approved (or even dermatologist developed), Farhang has a few recommendations of her own. “For a Lip SPF product with color, Laura Geller × Bliss ShinenShield Lip Balm SPF 15 is a great one,” she suggests. The dermatologist lauds this balm for its smooth texture, shade options, and SPF 15.
“For more sun exposure, ie. outside sweating, EltaMD UV Lip Balm SPF 36 is a good one that I recommend,” she adds. People with any skin type (sensitive especially!) will appreciate its hydrating and fragrance-free formula.
What to Look For in SPF Lip Balm
- SPF: First and foremost, the product you pick should have your desired level of SPF. If you want something with just a bit of protection that possibly spares that sunscreen-y taste, opt for SPF 15. If you plan to be outdoors and spending lots of time in the sun, aim for SPF 30, 40, or 50.
- Type: The two types of sunscreen formulas are chemical and mineral; the former absorbing (and releasing) UV rays, and the latter creating a physical shield against the sun. Both are effective—some products are even a hybrid of the two—but your formula of choice comes down to personal preference. Do you prefer avoiding complex chemicals in your products? Consider a mineral sunscreen. Do you hate thick consistencies? Maybe opt for a chemical lippie.
- Ingredients: While SPF level and formula type are both very important, you also want to consider what else you want your balm to do for you. Do you love how hyaluronic acid– or peptide-packed lip products make your pout feel after a few hours? Look for hydration-boosted balms. Do you have mature skin and want something that can also target fine lines and wrinkles? Keep an eye out for picks with ceramides, shea butter, and vitamin E.
How We Chose
We found the best SPF lip balms on the market by testing a handful of new and old products ourselves, wearing each product to the beach, outdoor summer concerts, the park… You get the gist. After days of testing, we decided which products were worth their salt and consulted a board-certified dermatologist for her professional opinions and picks. We considered price ranges, SPF ratings, customer reviews, and more when making our final selections, keeping functionality and style top of mind as we went.
