Lighter than Cream, More Coverage than Tints—10 Foundation Sticks That Upgrade Your Makeup Game
They're so easy to use.

Alyssa Brascia
Foundation, much like mascara, can be a very personal thing. Some prefer a liquid or powder formula, while others thrive by using a quick swipe-and-blend method with a trusty stick. I will tell you one thing. Celebrity makeup artists and beauty editors alike happen to use foundation sticks the most. Why? Well, for starters, celebrity makeup artists everywhere trust these easy, no-mess formulas when crafting flawless bases. “A good stick foundation should be creamy, easy to blend, and give buildable coverage that still looks like skin,” says celebrity makeup artist Daisy Toye. The artist also highlights the fact that they make touch-ups easy when you’re on the go.
Editors and makeup artists also agree that using a beauty sponge is key when applying a product like this. It helps create a gorgeous, seamless finish no matter what level of coverage you're looking for. If you're now itching to try one for yourself (or are looking for some new favorites to add to your rotation), keep scrolling! We’ve rounded up a comprehensive list of these editor- and makeup artist-loved foundation sticks below.
The Best Foundation Sticks, At a Glance
- Best Overall: Ilia Skin Rewind Blurring Complexion Stick
- Best Investment: Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick
- Best Versatility: Merit The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick
- Best for Mature Skin: Dior Forever Skin Perfect Foundation Stick
- Best Glowy: Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Foundation Stick
Best Overall: Ilia Skin Rewind Blurring Complexion Stick
Pros: Airbrushed finish, never cakey, wide shade range
Cons: Honestly, no complaints here
Shades: 42 | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Natural matte | Size: 0.35 oz.
Our entire team can attest that, yeah, this foundation is the real deal. Six editors tested and vetted this hydrating complexion stick, lauding its imperfection-blurring, skincare-packed, and long-lasting formula that never felt cakey or heavy, even on testers with dry skin. It comes in a hefty 42 hues, which appeased our editors who’ve historically struggled with finding good shade matches, and the stick itself is infused with a skin-plumping elixir of winged kelp extract (glow-boosting!), butterfly lavender extract (smooths fine lines!), and a ceramide-peptide complex, which tightens and strengthens the skin. Senior beauty editor Jamie Schneider finds herself reaching for this tube over and over because it “delivers the prettiest soft-matte finish without making me look cakey whatsoever.” Due to its outstanding editor approval, inclusive shade range, and reasonable price, this stick easily won its best overall moniker.
Customer review: “This is the FIRST complexion product I've ever found that disappears into my olive skin! I took a leap of faith when ordering online, but their shade description of ‘light-medium with olive understones’ was perfect! I genuinely wanted to cry because it's been exhausting having to constantly mix shades. My sister and brother-in-law said the finish looked very much like skin — very natural! I have dry, sensitive, eczema-prone skin. It's only been on for a few hours, but I am loving it so far. The finish... the shade match!”
Best Investment: Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick
Pros: Silky texture, weightless feel, skincare benefits
Cons: Quite pricey, somewhat limited shade range
Shades: 20 | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Natural | Size: 0.31 oz.
Simply put: if we had a gift card, we wouldn’t hesitate to add this expensive, yet priceless foundation to our carts. Who What Wear Beauty Director Erin Jahns cites this full-coverage stick from Westman Atelier as a favorite because the "coverage is stunning” and it “blends like butter." The formula is packed with plant-based squalane, skin-calming lipids, and raspberry cell extract to firm and hydrate the skin, plus it’s pigmented enough to mask redness and blemishes. Celebrity makeup artist Ash K Holm calls this stick a “luxury staple” because of its efficacy for both the complexion’s appearance and overall health, lauding its ability to mimic the look of natural skin—“making it especially popular for mature and dry skin types,” she explains.
Customer review: “FINALLY found the perfect color match! I was hesitant to purchase this due to the price, but the color is perfect, and it blends into my skin seamlessly. The packaging gives it a luxurious feel, and the application is easy. It is such a creamy formula that you can blend with a brush, sponge, or just your fingers!”
Best Budget: Sheglam Skin Magnet High Coverage Foundation Stick
Pros: Low price, smooth application, hydrating formula
Cons: High coverage may not be for everyone
Shades: 36 | Coverage: High | Finish: Natural | Size: 0.35 oz.
We won’t lie; this formula shocked us the moment we first swiped it. Associate beauty editor Alyssa Brascia and assistant beauty editor Sabrina Talbert quickly became fans after testing the formula; its ultra-smooth, hydrating formula made their skin look glowy without veering oily, and effectively covered up redness, blemishes, and fine lines without settling into them. Brascia has sensitive and dry skin, and not even she experienced an irritated flare-up or splotchy patches after blending in this oil-enriched formula. Plus, it has a pretty extensive shade range, if we do say so ourselves.
Customer review: “Great foundation, fast and easy to sheer out or build up coverage, nice finish, thick but breathable, barely notice it's even on. Highly recommend!”
Best Drugstore: Colourpop Pretty Fresh Tinted Foundation Balm
Pros: Budget-friendly, comfortable formula, natural results
Cons: Small shade range
Shades: 10 | Coverage: Light to medium | Finish: Natural | Size: 0.29 oz.
If you don’t want to splurge on the Ilia foundation stick just yet (we found them to wear quite similarly), we recommend giving this Colourpop tube a chance. This flexible formula is pumped full of skin-loving ingredients, including hydrating hyaluronic acid, plumping peptides, and calming niacinamide for smooth, happy skin that looks just as great as it feels. It blends easily with a finger or brush, and the coverage can be intensified with extra layers or spot treatments. However, we will point out that it has a fairly limited shade range—even if the hues are technically flexible.
Customer review: “I am obsessed with this foundation and happy to have found it! Much cheaper than the $48 Ilia stick foundation I usually use, and so light and creamy. Will stock up!”
Best Versatility: Merit The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick
Pros: Multi-purpose functionality, buildable coverage, wide shade range
Cons: Can feel thick if too much is applied, smaller than others on our list
Shades: 30 | Coverage: Light to medium | Finish: Natural matte | Size: 0.23 oz.
We know it’s in the name, but it really rings true—this one’s a godsend for the makeup minimalists. This slim, luxurious tube houses the one product you need for a flawless face, whether you’re going for a quick skin fix or a full beat. “This is the one product I take with me everywhere I go, whether that’s the gym or vacation,” says Brascia. “I can achieve a minimal look by spot-treating redness or blemishes, or scribble it all over for a my-skin-but-better base.” The buildable formula is infused with redness-calming sea daffodil extract (perfect for those with rosacea) and moisturizing fatty acids that make it extra comfortable. It’s a concealer, color corrector, and foundation all in one.
Customer review: “I've been using The Minimalist for a few years now, and I can't live without it. I have combination skin, dry under my eyes and on my forehead and it's super hydrating; it never looks flaky. This stick is an absolute staple!”
Best for Dry Skin: Live Tinted Huestick Complexion Stick
Pros: Ingredient-forward formula, smooth texture, long-wearing
Cons: No complaints here
Shades: 20 | Coverage: Medium to full | Finish: Soft matte | Size: 0.34 oz.
If you’re someone who prefers skincare to makeup (but begrudgingly wears it when necessary), you’re just like Talbert—and you’ll likely love this nourishing formula just as much as she did. Injected with squalane, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides, this formula acts more like an extension of your morning routine than a makeup step, and yet it effectively blurs pores, minimizes redness, and smooths texture at the same time. Talbert appreciated how nicely this product played with her combination skin, staying on her skin without budging all day (it promises up to 12-hour wear) and never clogging her pores, despite her sensitive complexion. In short, dry and irritable skin types are safe here!
Customer review: “I'm 45 and have neutral to dry skin (primarily dry on my cheeks), and this formula wears beautifully all day. It creates a ‘my skin but better’ effect when worn over a hydrating primer. Both creams and powders blend nicely over the foundation. I really enjoy this one.”
Best Glowy: Charlotte Tilbury Unreal Skin Sheer Glow Foundation Stick
Pros: Luminous finish, hydrating formula,
Cons: Not the most effective for covering redness or blemishes
Shades: 20 | Coverage: Light | Finish: Radiant | Size: 0.30 oz.
One of the main drawbacks of traditional foundation is how lackluster it often leaves your complexion looking in the end. Charlotte Tilbury’s illustrious Unreal Skin Foundation Stick coats your skin in a luminous, barely there layer that looks glowy (but never greasy!) and hydrates the skin with a blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, and daikon radish seed oil. “This is my go-to on days when I want to look snail mucin-level glowy while evening my skin tone and texture,” says Brascia. Though this formula offers light coverage instead of medium-to-full, you can still get a healthy wash of color with this illuminating stick.
Customer review: “Best lightweight foundation I’ve found. It evens out my skin tone, and it’s glowing, while looking like I’m not even wearing makeup. New favorite!”
Best for Mature Skin: Dior Forever Skin Perfect Foundation Stick
Pros: Hydrating formula, pore-blurring finish, minimizes the appearance of fine lines
Cons: None to add here
Shades: 25 | Coverage: Medium | Finish: Natural | Size: 0.37 oz.
Mature skin requires hydrating formulas that won’t accentuate wrinkles, and ideally, plump the skin for a soft, healthy glow. Toye doesn’t skip a beat before recommending the Dior Forever Skin Perfect stick for this task—“It doesn’t settle into fine lines and gives a soft, radiant finish that feels fresh and youthful,” she explains. “With foundation sticks in general, I always suggest moisturizing first since some formulas can be drying, but this one feels hydrating and actually wears longer because of it.” A slew of beauty editors also fell for this luxurious foundation, calling their resulting complexions “an absolute dream” and “resembling the Paris filter” before adding it to their makeup staples.
Customer review: “I will say I have a ton of foundations, but NEVER have I had a foundation like this! I walked out of my makeup room and was immediately told WOW, you look gorgeous! Perfect color, it literally looks like my skin, but way better. Excellent coverage but not heavy at all, and after wearing it for 16 hours it still looked amazing! I’m 50 so I have mature skin, drier with fine lines, [and] my skin looked beautiful all day, it wasn't drying and it blurred so well, no settling into the lines around my eyes at all!”
Best Coverage: Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation Stick
Pros: Featherlight formula, full coverage without looking cakey, long-wearing
Cons: Relatively small amount of product, some customers cite dryness
Shades: 32 | Coverage: Full | Finish: Natural | Size: 0.25 oz.
Aside from the pricey Westman Atelier pick, Holm’s other top recommendation is this “vanishing” foundation stick from Hourglass. Its formula is so lightweight and natural-looking that it almost looks like a magic trick—leaving your skin flawless-looking in its place and doing away with your imperfections. “Loved for its high pigment payoff and weightless formula, it delivers flawless coverage with minimal product,” Holm says, explaining its mainstay place in her makeup kit. “It blends seamlessly, photographs beautifully, and wears well from day to night.” Though this formula is super lightweight, it packs so much waterproof pigment it stamps this formula on your skin all day—offering up to 12 hours of angelic, no-budge coverage.
Customer review: “I love the consistency of this foundation and it looks amazing on my skin. I have combination skin and by the end of the day, the foundation still looks nice on my skin. It is buildable. It has become my go-to foundation.”
Best Shade Range: Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick
Pros: Perfects skin texture, controls oil without drying, multi-use
Cons: Arguably pricey
Shades: 42 | Coverage: Medium to full | Finish: Natural | Size: 0.31 oz.
How many foundation sticks can you say come in 42 shades? Our only other pick that can compete with this number is our best overall (Ilia!), and that says a lot. This skin-mimicking formula works hard to not only adapt to your skin tone and correct any imperfections, but simultaneously offer moisture for dry skin and sebum control for oilier types—an infusion of light-diffusing powders mattifying the skin without drying it out. Celebrity makeup artist Judi Gabbay prefers this foundation for its vast shade options and versatility: “For either spot concealing or more full coverage, this multi-use product is also great for the gal on the go,” she explains.
Customer review: “I’m 65 years old and love this foundation stick as it doesn’t accentuate my wrinkles in my face as a liquid foundation does. It’s so easy to use and compact to travel with!”
What to Look For in a Foundation Stick
Holm has a few ground rules she sticks to when picking out a foundation stick that will perfect her high-profile clientele’s complexions—and they’re worth applying to your own search, too. “A great foundation stick should strike the perfect balance between coverage, texture, and wearability,” she explains. Below, a few of her quality checks before clicking “purchase.”
- Texture: “The formula should be creamy enough to glide on effortlessly without tugging at the skin, yet lightweight enough to avoid feeling cakey.”
- Coverage: “Buildable coverage is key, allowing it to work as a spot concealer, a light tint, or a full-coverage base.”
- Wear: “Longevity matters too—your stick should hold up throughout the day without oxidizing or breaking apart.”
- Functionality: “Finally, versatility sets the best sticks apart: the right formula can serve as a foundation, concealer, or even contour when used in different shades.”
Which is better, regular foundation or foundation sticks?
“It really depends—sticks are amazing for convenience, travel, and spot application, while liquid foundations are better if you want seamless, all-over coverage,” says Toye. “I love sticks for red carpet touch-ups.”
Holm also points out that there is more versatility when it comes to finishes (think: matte, satin, dewy, plus sheerer formula options) when dealing with liquids. “Foundation sticks, however, are unmatched in convenience,” says Holm. “They’re portable, mess-free, and versatile, perfect for travel, quick touch-ups, or building customizable coverage. Many people find themselves using both—a liquid foundation for all-over coverage, and a stick foundation for on-the-go precision or contour.”
Which skin type works best with foundation sticks?
“Foundation sticks are most versatile for normal to combination skin, since they balance creaminess with staying power,” says Holm. “Dry skin types can use them successfully with proper prep—hydration is key. Oily skin types may lean toward liquids or powders for longer wear, but stick foundations with a semi-matte finish can still perform well if set with powder.”
Which foundation is best for mature skin?
Toye highlighted the Dior Forever Skin Perfect Foundation Stick as the best option for mature skin, but Holm also vouches for the Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick’s efficacy on skin etched with fine lines. “It has a creamy texture with skincare benefits that create a radiant, skin-like finish without settling into fine lines,” Holm explains.
However, stick foundations may not be the best option, period, for mature skin—lighter formulas may be better suited. “Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is a classic liquid option that delivers buildable, luminous coverage while keeping the skin looking fresh and natural,” she explains. “For days when a lighter touch is preferred, a skin tint like the Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint can even out tone with a breathable, dewy finish that enhances rather than masks the skin.”
How to Use
Gabbay has a few application tips for when you're applying a stick foundation. "A lot of people say to use your fingers, but I don't believe in that," she says. "Stick foundations are a little bit creamier and greasier than a normal foundation so you're just going to add more oils if you use your fingers. I recommend using a brush when you apply it or a wet beauty sponge to blend it out."
"You can also use different shades on different parts of your face—that's why I love foundation sticks. Applying straight from the stick is your best bet. If you apply it onto the back of the hand it can get too warm after a while. You can buff it out better with a brush like the It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Complexion Perfection Brush #7 ($50) or the AOA Studio Paw Paw Wonder Blender ($10)—I love those!"
How We Tested
Our team of beauty editors assessed our own collections of foundation sticks, evaluating the ones we reach for often and nixing the ones we tend to overlook. (We want the best of the best for you, after all.) Then, we consulted with celebrity makeup artists to ask the hard-hitting questions: What do you, as a makeup artist tasked with making celebrity skin look perfect under blemish-illuminating lights, look for in a foundation stick that can make those imperfections disappear? What are the qualities in a good formula?
From there, we asked which foundation sticks were their go-tos in their respective kits, and not surprisingly, their picks shared a lot of overlap with our own. Then, we laid out our real feelings about each stick, detailing our praises and pain points for each. We categorized each to explain which foundation stick is best for your specific needs and created this comprehensive guide to ensure that your shopping experience is as smooth and painless as possible.
