Makeup Artists Swear These Are the Best Bronzers for Fair Skin, so We Put Them to the Test
Orange haze, begone.

Jamie Schneider
Take it from me, someone so pale I could give the vampires in Twilight a run for their money: The wrong bronzer can look downright weird on fair skin. I'm extremely pale, and bronzer has always been tricky for me. Some formulas read too orange, and others make me look like I rubbed dirt on my face.
The trick to finding a good bronzer is choosing one that genuinely makes you look like you just got back from a sun-drenched vacation. It should also be easily blendable so you can diffuse it on your face as if you were naturally sun-kissed.
After a lot of trial and error, I've finally found bronzers that I like on my own skin. Discover them all below (with testing photos!) along with go-to picks from WWW beauty editors and celebrity makeup artists—plus some expert shade-matching and application tips for good measure. Scroll ahead to eliminate the dreaded orange haze once and for all.

The Best Bronzers for Fair Skin, Tested and Reviewed
Best Liquid: Milk Makeup Bionic Sunkissed Liquid Bronzer in Time Travel
Pros: Has a dewy finish without using any shimmer, easy to control the depth of pigment
Cons: Not the best for oily skin
Format: Liquid
Shades: 4
This liquid bronzer from Milk Makeup melts into the skin seamlessly. It looks natural and makes my skin appear glowy and hydrated thanks to the hyaluronic acid, snow mushroom, and vegan collagen pumped into the formula. A little goes a long way with this number; just a small dot is all you need to add warmth to your features.
Customer review: "Such a blendable glow/tan look—I put it on the top of my cheekbones. Stopped wearing concealer because this makes my face look so much better."
Best Powder: Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Creamy Bronzing Powder in 100 Sunkissed Sand
Pros: Has a glowy finish that doesn't read sparkly, lasts a long time, blends like a dream
Cons: Very pigmented—apply slowly
Format: Powder
Shades: 4
"As far as powders go, this one by Armani is my holy grail," says WWW senior beauty editor Jamie Schneider. "I don't usually opt for shimmery bronzers (I prefer semi-matte options, which tend to look more natural), but this formula has a glowy, satin-like finish that makes me look positively radiant. I also appreciate the compact's generous size. I've had this bronzer for over a year and have yet to hit pan!"
Customer review: "I'm a makeup artist and have a fetish for bronzers—I've bought all of them, from the Hermes to the Physican's Formula. I have to say, this bronzer is special. It truly blends itself—never over-applies, never looks blotchy, and is seamless on the skin. Not shimmery (despite there being shimmer in the pan). The shade 90 works on skin from fair to medium. I didn't think that shade would work for me, being a medium olive complexion, but it still shows up as a really pretty natural warmth. 10/10 Armani!"
Best Contour-Bronzer Hybrid: Patrick Ta Major Sculpt Crème Contour & Powder Bronzer Duo in She's Bronzed
Pros: Sculpts features, a little pigment goes a long way, never looks patchy
Cons: Packaging is very fragile—try not to drop it!
Format: Cream and powder
Shades: 5
Can't decide between cream and powder bronzer? You don't have to—just snag Patrick Ta's stunning duo. Apply the cream first to sculpt your features, then follow up with the shimmery powder bronzer to add even more glow. It's a favorite of Schneider's, and WWW associate beauty editor Alyssa Brascia loves it, too, for subtle dimension that makes an impact. When multiple beauty editors consider it one of their absolute faves, that's when you know it's a winner.
Customer review: "I've tried this product for a few months and I love it! The color payoff is great. I use the creme before the powder (this is what I prefer personally) and it lasts all day. This sits very well on top of my foundation."
Best Palette: Mineral Fusion Bronzer Palette in Pool Party
Pros: Can be used as eye shadow too
Cons: Shades are shimmery, if you're looking for a matte bronzer
Format: Powder
Shades: 4
"[This is] a bronzer quad that is great for glowy, sun-kissed skin in the summer," says celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles. "I also love the versatility of the palette. You can use the pretty shimmery colors to catch the light on your cheekbones or use them on the eyes for a bit of shimmer there. I also appreciate the different tones, so you can use them in spring, summer, or fall."
Customer review: "I love Mineral Fusion products. I like the natural lightweight feel of the makeup and very subtle shimmer of the bronzer. Pretty decent ingredients as well."
Best Everyday Bronzer: Saie Sun Melt Natural Cream Bronzer in Light Bronze
Pros: Lasts a while, a great contour-bronzer hybrid, instantly fuses to the skin
Cons: Some reviewers say the compact is difficult to open
Format: Cream
Shades: 6
The best thing about this bronzer is that it goes on sheer, so it's easy to build it up to the intensity you want. It's my go-to when I want to look just a tad more sun-kissed. Schneider agrees and considers it a staple in her makeup bag. "If you're looking for a subtle, natural-looking bronzer to wear for everyday makeup looks, this is it," she declares. "It melts into my skin like butter, and the peachy undertones add just enough warmth to my fair skin without reading too Oompa Loompa–like."
Customer review: "Was [looking] for a bronzer for my fair/light skin tone. I tried about 5 before getting my hands on this one. This is probably the best bronzer for all over warmth. It's the perfect in between cool-warm shade."
Best Budget: e.l.f. Cosmetics Putty Bronzer in Tan Lines
Pros: Natural-looking semi-matte finish, easy to blend, doesn't budge once it sets
Cons: Not the best option for dry skin
Format: Cream to powder
Shades: 5
Stiles is also a fan of e.l.f.'s cream-to-powder confection, noting that it comes "in a wide range of shades, including ones that work beautifully on fair skin, which is hard to find." She adds, "The texture of the formula is easy to use with your fingers or a brush, and it blends easily and seamlessly into the skin."
Customer review: "I bought this item, it came super quick. I've been using it for 5 days and I must say it's pretty freaking great! It gives a beautiful bronze look that can be layered or sheared out more. I also love that it doesn't budge all day!"
Best Splurge: Westman Atelier Beauty Butter Powder Bronzer in Coup de Soleil
Pros: Blends easily and is super buildable, great to use on lids too, chic, luxurious packaging
Cons: Very, very light, if you're hoping for more pigment payoff
Format: Powder
Shades: 3
"I like a soft, matte bronzer, but I also like to strategically add shimmer and glow after I've bronzed a face," says celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno. "The powder bronzer looks beautiful and has a lovely sheer (and buildable) finish, the packaging is gorgeous, and the little embossed hearts on the pressed powder itself make it all the more special." I just tried the bronzer and found it gave my face the most dreamy subtle warmth."
Customer review: "I love anything Westman Atelier and when I saw a video of Martha Stewart hitting pan on this bronzer, I knew I had to have it. I can do without the heavy packaging but the bronzer itself is very fine milled and the color pay off is absolutely lovely. Pricey yes, but quality and quantity makes it all worth it."
Best Blendable: Guerlain Terracotta Sunkissed Natural Bronzer Powder in Light Warm
Pros: Very subtle shimmer that looks glowy, not sparkly, never applies streaky
Cons: Pricey
Format: Powder
Shades: 6
"A staple in my kit for decades, these bronzers are perfect for warming the skin," Stiles says. "Not matte but not shimmery, they bring a touch of the sun to the skin that reads completely natural." The $62 price tag is nothing to scoff at, but it does last you quite a while. Just one swipe gives you the prettiest, most natural-looking bronze.
Customer review: "I have been using this for 20 years and I still love it!! It's a guarantee product."
Best Blush-Bronzer Hybrid: Dibs Beauty Desert Island Duo in You Do You and Mood Boost
Pros: Multitasking product, takes the guesswork out of shade-matching blush and bronzer, creamy and easy to blend
Cons: You can't swap the blushes for a custom color combination
Format: Cream
Shades: 9
If you, like me, love multitasking beauty products, try this blush-and-bronzer duo out for size. You can layer colors, blend them together, and put them all over your face for a natural, healthy-looking glow.
Customer review: "I'd heard such rave reviews about this duo. Now that I got to try it for myself, I understand all the hype. Such a great formula that blends seamlessly. The color combo I picked up is what I personally prefer. But I'd also love if the colors were interchangeable so we can customize our own duo."
Best for Beginners: LYS Beauty No Limits Cream Bronzer and Contour Stick in Honest
Pros: Buttery, hydrating formula, easy to blend and build, has perfectly neutral undertones
Cons: Pigment is a bit thick—something to note for acne-prone skin
Format: Cream
Shades: 7
Celebrity makeup artist Jamie Greenberg, founder of Jamie Makeup, is quick to tout this LYS number, which she praises for its incredible shade range, including "a great one for fair skin" with neutral undertones. "It's also creamy with perfect blendability," she adds, which makes it top-notch for bronzing beginners. It's impossible to mess up. Bonus points for the triangle-shaped applicator, which allows you to carve your cheekbones with the utmost precision.
Customer review: "Yes, yes, yes! This product deserves all the hype. Sooo creamy and perfect for bronzing all areas of the face. A little goes a long way, which also means this should last you a while!"
Best With Shimmer: Tower 28 Bronzino Illuminating Cream Bronzer in Sun Coast
Pros: Gives you an instant vacation glow, makes skin look dewy and hydrated, safe for sensitive skin
Cons: No matte options
Format: Cream
Shades: 4
If you like a shimmery bronzer, this one is for you. It blends easily with your fingers (or a brush) and imparts a subtle shimmer. Despite the glimmer, it never looks unnaturally sparkly—more like the glow after a two-week beach vacation.
Customer review: "It's really good. Made me like a bronzed goddess, and it's sooo glowy."
Best for Oily Skin: Fenty Beauty Sun Stalk'r Instant Warmth Bronzer in Inda Sun
Pros: Has a natural-looking soft-matte finish, finely milled powder never looks patchy, easy to blend
Cons: Very pigmented—you'll want to avoid using a heavy hand
Format: Powder
Shades: 9
This is the first bronzer I ever tried that I actually liked. It's long-wearing, goes on so smoothly, and looks like your skin. It's also so weightless that you'll forget you're even wearing makeup at all, yet it truly stays put all day despite any elements you may stumble across—humidity, sweat, rain, tears, etc.
Customer review: "I just repurchased this after completely using one up. The tone is great for light-toned skin. This applies and wears beautifully. I will continue to repurchase."
Best Color Payoff: Kosas The Sun Show Glowy Warmth Bronzer in Waves
Pros: Provides the subtlest kiss of warmth, great for everyday looks, easy to build
Cons: Is slightly shimmery, if you prefer matte options
Format: Powder
Shades: 5
This cushiony, soft bronzer gives a subtle sheen without being too sparkly to make your skin look dewy. It's literally golden hour in powder form, effortlessly catching the light and giving your features the prettiest halo effect.
Customer review: "This has become my everyday bronzer. The lightest shade in Waves is perfect for my fair skin, it does not go orange on me and stays neutral. I find it looks best when I use a light hand as it is pretty shimmery so if I apply too much it doesn't look as natural. This works for me though since I don't wear heavy makeup and just like a light touch of warmth/color. If you don't like shimmer in your bronzer, this probably won't work for you."
Best for Dry Skin: RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer
Pros: Super glowy, great for dry skin, can be used on the lids as eye shadow too
Cons: Only one shade option
Format: Cream
Shades: 1
This ultra-glowy bronzer has a sheer, nongreasy formula that delivers a sun-kissed look to the complexion. It looks great placed just above the cheekbones for a translucent glow, and you can pop it on your lids, too, for a bronzed monochromatic moment.
Customer review: "This is one of my favorite RMS Beauty products. It gives your face a natural, beautiful sun-kissed glow and leaves your face with a nice dewy finish. Try it! You won't be disappointed! Best applied with their blush brush for a truly perfect and easy application."
Best for an Allover Glow: Iconic London Sheer Bronze Liquid Bronzer
Pros: Easy to mix with foundation or moisturizer for an instant glow, precise tip applicator makes the pigment easy to control
Cons: Limited shade options
Format: Liquid
Shades: 3
This bronzer uses a unique gel-to-watercolor formula that melts into the skin to create an amazing sun-kissed finish that lasts all day. It's both sheer and buildable, making it the perfect option for a lit-from-within glow where you need it most.
Customer review: "These liquid bronzers are so underrated. I have been able to use all shades on my fair, warm skin. They can give a subtle wash of healthy bronze glow or built-up. Don't let the smaller package fool you. It lasted me with daily use a very long time. Totally recommend for the everyday modern girl/woman!"
Why do some bronzers look orange on fair skin?
We've been there. Bronzers are meant to add warmth to the face, which means they're typically warm toned—meaning they contain red, yellow, and orange undertones. "On fair skin, those warm pigments can look too intense or unnatural, especially when layered over uneven texture or dryness," Greenberg shares.
The formula you choose matters too. According to makeup artist Stevie Nelson, head of education at Saie, bronzers are more likely to apply patchy if the formula catches on dry patches, sunscreen, or dewy makeup products. "On lighter skin, there's no depth to hide uneven payoff, so any skips will be even more amplified," she notes.
To mitigate the orange haze, Greenberg recommends applying your bronzer in gradual layers (more on that later) and choosing formulas with neutral or subtly warm undertones—like the ones above—instead.
What to Look for in a Bronzer for Fair Skin
- Undertones: As discussed, most bronzers contain red, yellow, and orange undertones to mimic a sun-kissed glow. To avoid looking too orange, those with fair skin should seek out bronzers with neutral undertones or even cool-toned numbers some might consider contour products. If you do go with a warmer option, just make sure it's subtle and doesn't read too fiery.
- Format: Some prefer a cream or liquid solution; others love to dust a powder bronzer over their features. It's ultimately up to personal preference, but Nelson does prefer a creamy confection. "Cream bronzers often look the most natural on fair complexions because they blend into the skin rather than sitting on top," she shares.
- Payoff: "Choose a formula with light to medium payoff rather than something highly pigmented," shares Nelson. "Bronzers with a softer level of coverage are easier to build gradually and blend seamlessly into fair skin without creating harsh edges or an orange cast."
- Shade: For those with fair skin, experts recommend choosing a bronzer that's one to two shades deeper than your skin tone for the most natural-looking result.
How to Find Your Shade
As a general rule, "look for bronzers that are only one to two shades deeper than your skin tone and that lean neutral to slightly warm," Greenberg shares. "Choose one that mimics a subtle sun-kissed glow, not a dramatic shift." If you can, she also recommends testing the product along the jawline or neck to assess how it looks in natural light. "A trick: Blend a small dot on your cheek and let it sit for a few minutes. If it oxidizes dark or orange, it may not be ideal," she adds.
How to Apply Bronzer on Fair Skin
First thing's first: Make sure your base has fully dried down. Again, bronzers that catch on creamy pigment can easily look patchy on fair skin.
Once you're ready to apply your bronzer of choice, Greenberg suggests applying it in light layers. "Build gradually, letting each layer settle before adding more," she explains. "Focus on where the sun naturally hits—the forehead, tops of cheeks, bridge of nose, maybe a touch along the jaw. Blend and soften any edges."
If you have a super-creamy or serum-like formula, she recommends warming it up with your fingertips before tapping it onto your skin. Blending with your own hands can also help it "melt" better, but a fluffy brush or dense sponge can also work if you don't love to finger-paint. If you do use a brush, try the brush-priming method makeup artists love: "Warm it up on the back of your hand first, work evenly into the brush's bristles, then gently press into the skin in sheer layers," Nelson advises.
