There's So Much to Talk About from the Marc Jacobs Show Last Night

This New York Fashion Week, Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show closed the season instead of Marc Jacobs, whose high-profile runway has historically been the grand finale. This schedule change has caused a lot of discussion in the fashion industry, but comparing the two shows is a fruitless task. Each exists in a category all its own.

Rihanna closed out fashion week with a bang, but Jacobs delivered the cherry on top, the perfectly sweet and indulgent note that left us feeling fully satisfied. No meal—or fashion week—would be complete without it, certainly no memorable one.

Here’s what to know from last night’s beautiful, and certainly buzzy event.

Jacobs Went BIG

Jacobs’s collections always provide so much wearability with a dose of theatricality, and S/S 19 didn’t stray from that. In fact, the frothy, larger-than-life (or at least larger than some models' frames) ruffles were a standout part of the runway. These were the especially awe-inducing details that separate a fashion collection on a runway from a fashion show.

The ’50s Nostalgia

In 2018, the 1950s may seem like simpler times—depending who you ask, that is—but Jacobs certainly favored the aesthetics of the period. And it’s evidenced by the sherbet-colored trapeze coats, full midi skirts, and tons of playful cardigans sent down the runway.

Those. Glittery. Tights

Frankly, the look of sparkly legs sent us spiraling down a Google search for similar tights and socks to break out as soon as possible. A few suggestions are below.

The FROW

No one is surprised by a star-packed front row at the Marc Jacobs show. However, Nicki Minaj was the only guest to arrive in a creation as statement-making as the ones we spotted on the runway. We respect that dedication.

The Cherry on Top

Even though the biggest news coming from the Marc Jacobs show included the fact that the designer didn’t begin his show promptly—a fact every fashion editor knows and expects as if it were written law—it did provide one of the memorable shows of New York Fashion Week.

“This collection is a very light, sheer, pretty version of Fall,” Jacob stated succinctly in his press release. And in that spirit, it provided a bit of sweetness in a literal sense with confectionery colors and head scarves that were reminiscent of candy wrappers; figuratively, the collection was a feast for the eyes and an approach to fashion that's beautiful and grand, without taking itself too seriously.
