This Summer Trend Is "Unflattering", and I Couldn't Care Less

When it comes to "unflattering" or "ugly" trends, I tend to welcome them into my life with open arms. There's something about pushing the boundaries of other people's expectations of how I should be dressing that really gets me, and now more than ever, a lot of people going. First, it was chunky sneakers, then it was Hawaiian shirts, and now, it's long shorts. Longer shorts have previously been identified as "unflattering" due to where the hem hits at your leg, the way the looser fit makes your backside look, and so on and so forth. Such things have even been told to me by my own mother, but that's just because she "wants me to look like my best self" to which I roll my eyes back far into my head.
You get my point, which is that there was definitely a time when I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a pair of shorts that exceeded past the highest point of my thighs, but today, I couldn't care less where my shorts hit, and frankly, the longer the better. Bring. On. The. Controversy. Okay, so maybe wearing longer shorts isn't necessarily a controversy to you, but if you would have asked me a year ago if I would wear the below pair of Topshop shorts, I would have laughed in your face. Now I look at them and wonder why I am not as cool as the model wearing them and want to immediately purchase them in an attempt to at least try to live up to her level of chill. Don't you just love trends?!
The proof is in the pudding, folks—shorts are officially getting longer this summer and there's nothing you can do about it (besides buy yourself some short shorts and pretend you never read this). Personally, I am encouraging this trend for many reasons. One, it's about time for shorts to have a moment and the below styles are getting the ball rolling. Two, it's almost summer and you need shorts anyway, so you might as well think outside of the box. And three, it's fun to break expectations and experiment with styles that make you a tad uncomfortable. For me, that's one of the most exciting parts of fashion.
Next up, shop the swimsuits that will highlight your favorite part of your body, whatever that may be.
