Confession: I haven’t always been a fan of denim on denim. Perhaps I’ve seen too many “bad Britneys” to realise just how great it was. But as they say, timing is everything, and after I had my first child double denim didn’t just get a workout in my wardrobe, it became a weekly go-to.
Pre-baby, getting dressed was a leisurely affair with lots of outfit changes and umming and ahhing in front of the mirror. Getting dressed post-baby takes on a whole new meaning: Basically, you have five minutes to get yourself sorted so you need to know it’s something that looks polished and put-together. It was about this time that I started to plan my outfits the night before and double denim began to feature heavily in my weekly rotation. Why? Once you get the hang of it, it’s a fail-safe option for looking both stylish and effortless.
While double denim isn’t that complicated to put together, it’s still considered. It’s all about the cut, colour, wash, and how you accessorise the look. Founder and creative director of cult denim brand One Teaspoon, Jamie Blakey, sums it up perfectly:
“Doing double denim right is all about proportions. And it’s important to keep the look current by considering where fashion and trends are at at the time”.

DO
- Mix and match with two different tones. If you’re a total beginner, start by pairing different shades of denim together, such as white jeans and a blue denim jacket, or black jeans and a chambray shirt. It’s almost impossible to go wrong this way.
- Team an oversized longline shirt and a cropped kick flare, this combo is great for most shapes and sizes.
- Team with sneakers or low-cut Doc Martens for an effortless look.
- Dress up your denim with luxe-looking items, including statement heels, a blazer, or a red lip.
DON'T
- Do a fitted shirt with fitted bottoms. You want to balance out your look.
- Right now, you wouldn’t go a Western-style boot or pumps with double denim.
