It's hard to believe that 2019 is coming to an end. A new year is on its way, and with it comes the dreaded annual concept of new year's resolutions. Though instead of pledging to give up chocolate, or vowing to hit the gym every morning as I've done in the past, this year I decided to come up with a few resolutions that I might actually keep. Specifically, resolutions that pertain to fashion and style.
Whether it be bypassing unflattering trends, shopping more sustainably or taking into account price per wear, this year my resolutions all revolve around changing my mindset towards style.
In an effort to cultivate a wardrobe of pieces I know will stand the test of time, for me, 2020 will be all about shopping with purpose rather than impulse. Will I succeed? I certainly hope so. Scroll through below for my full list of 2020 style resolutions.
Resolution 1: Delve into the resale market
From Depop to Etsy and Vestiaire Collective, it's never been easier to shop vintage and secondhand items online. Yes, it may take a little more sleuthing to find the pieces you love, but it will result in a wardrobe comprised of items that are completely distinctive and unique. Not to mention that it's also good for the planet.
Resolution 2: Invest in elevated classics that will last a lifetime
Whether it be a perfectly tailored pair of trousers, a wear-anywhere little black dress or a beige coat that looks good over everything, you'll never regret investing in classic pieces that never go out of style.
Resolution 3: Only shop for items that I know actually suit me
Though I do love a puff-sleeved top and can appreciate the cool-girl appeal of voluminous tiered smock dress, these trendy items tend to swamp my petite five-foot frame. Next year, I'll be focusing on only shopping for items which are actually flattering on me and exploring the best options available in petite sections.
Resolution 4: Support more brands that value sustainability
Whether new or established, there are so many brands on the market who are turning their attention to sustainability by prioritising recycled materials, organic alternatives and eco-conscious production. I, too, plan to prioritise the environment by supporting brands with a common goal of sustainability.
Resolution 5: Factor in price per wear
While it’s so tempting to buy into any and every of-the-moment trend, this year, I want to focus on purchasing items that I know I'll wear for years to come. Choosing timeless well-made items that guarantee quality and longevity ensures I can appreciate my pieces for longer, effectively keeping the cost per wear to a minimum.
