We Try Before You Buy: The 2019 Trends Our Editors Will Invest In

Our We Try Before You Buy series aims to take the stress out of shopping and eliminate the number of post office visits you make each month to return failed online orders. We test new-season buys and styling ideas so you don't have to, thus saving you some coin by letting you know what's worth the spend.

The New Year is a time of reflection for many, however, as fashion editors, we predominantly use this period to look forward to what's in store for us in 2019. The spring/summer trends are certainly varied. The colour of the season is beige, while overaccessorising, bows and tie-dye promise to make our wardrobes a little bolder.

To bring our trend report to life, our editors Hannah, Emma, Isabel and Joy went to 5 Carlos Place (MatchesFashion's new townhouse) to show how we'll be wearing the trends that will go onto define 2019. We're also introducing you to many of the cult buys of the season, from the new It bag from Chloé to the Ganni piece that's bound to take over Instagram.

1. Overaccessorising

"If you thought 2018 was a wacky year for trends, wait for 2019 when XL accessorising takes centre stage. Remember that Jacquemus bag on the S/S 19 runway? That's our compass for this trend. For my interpretation, I went for 'more is more' but in a monochromatic manner. Yes, I'm wearing a lace hat, a pearl bag, and matching pearl necklace and earrings (sorry, Coco Chanel), but choosing them in all-white brought them together. Should you want to go all the way with this trend, next year is your time to shine." — Isabel Mundigo-Moore

2. Boilersuits

"On the rail, I thought this boilersuit would be a little boxy, but I loved this Ganni denim one-piece so much that I bought it five minutes after the shoot finished. I particularly love the slits at the ankle, which show off your boots. This blue Chloé crossbody is also hands down my favourite bag for the new season." — Emma Spedding

3. Beige

"A quick glance at my wardrobe shows that I'm distinctly not a minimalist, but I'd really like to try and pare things back a little for my day-to-day outfits in 2019. There's no better time to do it than with the trillions of shades of beige on offer for the new season. I've never felt quite so grown-up and rich (or like I shouldn't eat spaghetti) as I do in minimalistic clothing. I could perhaps get bored of neutral clothing, but there's something eternal and eternally fabulous about a grey Chloé bag and nude stilettos from Jimmy Choo." — Hannah Almassi

4. Bows

"Since bows will be the seashells of 2019 (feel free to quote me on that), I was tempted to try them out as a challenge to my go-to minimal style. I usually don't go in for embellishments, but this Cecilie Bahnsen dress covered in bows changed my mind. This dress didn't feel too over-the-top because the bows were small and the dress is so comfortable. I matched it with classic accessories and minimal jewellery, wearing bows this way made the trend feel more accessible. I'll definitely be buying into this trend next year—specifically this dress." — Isabel Mundigo-Moore

5. Fringing

"Yes, I was one of those people drawn into this season's Wild West trend hook, line and sinker, and you know what? I'm not even a little bit sorry, because if the spring/summer 2019 collections are anything to go by, this look ain't going nowhere. Fringing is the new season spin on the cowboy trend, and this Ganni jacket ticks all the boxes with its tassels, fresh white colourway and boxy fit. All it needs is a pair of straight-leg jeans and Fendi's bonkers-yet-brilliant metallic boots. Space Cowboys, anyone?" — Joy Montgomery

6. Vacation

"In a dream world, I'd spend the entirety of my summer in a beautiful house in the Mediterranean. This lifestyle might be out of reach, but the wardrobe isn't thanks to the vintage vacation trend. Altuzarra's Resort 19 collection was inspired by the romantic Italian scenery in Call Me By Your Name, so this midi skirt was the perfect place to start building my 'summer in Monaco' look. I then wore a green cropped tie-waist shirt, a top-handle basket bag, shell-adorned Etro sandals and an oversized pearl from Alighieri. I quickly learned that more is more is key when it comes to this trend." — Emma Spedding

7. Prairie Dresses

"I'm a sucker for a 'fugly' frock, and I mean that in the best way possible. Prairie dresses have been a favourite of mine since childhood—particularly after reading Little House on the Prairie and watching The Sound of Music—and I was over the moon when I discovered they were making a comeback for S/S 19. Vampire's Wife are the gold standard in prairie dresses, as they combine the essentials (ruffled cuffs and calf-grazing length) with a super-flattering fit that nips in at the waist. I'll be wearing mine with Prada's gold platforms and Chloé's Nile bag for all my summer party needs." — Joy Montgomery
