Every denim lover knows who Emily Current and Meritt Elliott are. They're the California-based design duo not only responsible for megabrand Current/Elliott, but also their latest venture, The Great, which though only in its third season is already a mainstay in every cool girl’s wardrobe. We caught up with Current and Elliott to chat about their fall collection, which will include denim for the first time. Thankfully, they shared their styling tips for transitioning these pieces into fall, making us all the more excited for the upcoming season. “We always say that this brand is like standing on the edge of a cliff and looking out at a wide expanse—it’s this sort of next step or feeling of the great wide open. I think we see our girl as full of wonder.”
If you’re not already acquainted with The Great, it’s a collection reminiscent of California’s golden years. Current and Elliott cite Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and the Boxcar Children as design inspiration, and the pieces are styled in a way that delightfully tows the line between masculine and feminine. It’s ideal for the tomboy who understands fashion and knows how to still incorporate feminine pieces like a Victorian blouse or eyelet top.
