People are Saying This Denim Trend Is Officially Dead

Denim is such a controversial topic to talk about. Fashion people feel very strongly about the denim shapes, cuts, and washes they love. Jeans have been a staple in wardrobe since forever (or if you want to deep dive into the specifics, we've got you covered), but never before has denim played such an important role in our wardrobes. It fills many designer collections, and our way of dressing has evolved—we're more casual now, say compared to our parents or grandparents era, so we can get away with wearing our denims on a more regular basis.
Full-blown denim season is upon us, and to help understand the biggest trends out there (there are just so many right now), we tapped four Australian denim experts. Read on to discover the jeans they think are in and out this season, with more than one person agreeing a certain style, is definitely one to leave behind. Keep scrolling!
GENERAL PANTS CO.
“Flimsy super stretchy jeans with a spandex feel have had their day. They can show up bumps and lumps and they also don’t make sense when you consider denim’s rugged heritage.
Rigid denim is a big trend for 2017. It’s traditionally 100% cotton denim, woven into a tougher, heavier weight fabric. This amazing denim base has an open yarn which creates a stony character when the fabric is washed and worn. This gives the jeans that hard-to-find vintage look. As you wash and wear the jean, it will wear with you, so the longer and more often you wear them, the better they will look.

“I’ll personally be staying away from stretchy skinny jeans/low rise styles for a little while longer and opting for a high-rise with a straight/cropped flare shape or a more elevated style.
I’m really into the Ellery Pyramid Jeans ($590) at the moment, they come in a dark/raw denim with the traditional burnt orange stitch, gold hardware and a cropped flare shape. They are great because they are very modern and on trend but are also flattering and have a sense of nostalgia which I love.
Denim as a whole won't be going anywhere fast either. Bags, shoes, tops, jackets, skirts—it’s not just about jeans anymore. I also love how raw denim or a true-blue denim is being used a lot.”

“We’re leaving the long flare jean behind. It's all about the mom jean for 2017. It's a real nod to the '80s, and is great for showing off your figure. A mom jean is best worn with either a bodysuit, a tucked in fitted tee or white shirt.”

“Paler tones are taking a back seat for the moment and feel suddenly a bit dated. Shadier hues such as dark indigos, black edge denims and vintage military twills are denim must haves for this season.”
