Like some of the best trends in fashion's history, I have a funny feeling that my favourite summer style may well divide the crowd. Crochet has undoubtedly had a tumultuous relationship with the shopping public over the years: Originally regarded as merely a cheap alternative to lace, crochet was championed as a valuable "make do and mend" technique during World War II, however, it was in the swinging 1960s that it took on a life of its own in the fashion world.
It was also during this decade that the iconic "granny square" started to proliferate, manifesting on everything from crop tops to cushions, which is fitting considering that in recent years crochet became increasingly synonymous with a certain twee, OAP aesthetic. It's had a tough old time.
But of course, the last two years has been nothing but a roll call of fashion trends that were previously considered "frumpy" (yep, I hate that word) and outdated. Think hiking sandals, fleeces and smock dresses. Plus, add to this the fact that 1960s and 70s trends are seeing a resurgence, and there's no better time for crochet to make its comeback.
Despite not usually being a big fan of the boho-chic look, I recently fell for a vintage crochet waistcoat, which I plan on wearing all summer-long with a white tee and flared jeans. For those wanting to go all-out, there are classic crochet dresses and also trousers, as seen on Jen Wonders—just add Velcro sandals and a white tank top for warm spring days.
