It's Time for a Closet Clean-Out—6 Items I'm Ditching and 6 I'm Keeping

My favorite part of spring—other than drinking Aperol spritzes on the street and spending weekends in the park—is doing a spring closet clean-out. This spring, I'm focused on decluttering my wardrobe and picking pieces that are versatile and elevated. No more overly trendy pieces that I'll wear once. When cleaning out my closet, I wanted to keep track of which pieces I needed to part ways with and which I needed to add. After all, the best part of cleaning out your closet is the guilt-free shopping you get to do after. I narrowed it down to six hero pieces I wanted to make sure were in my spring wardrobe rotation and six that are unfortunately on their way out.

As I'm sure you are well aware of, we are in the ballet-flats renaissance. The fashion set can't get enough of them right now—myself included. They're the perfect pretty and sweet shoes for a workday and can be dressed up for a weekend outing. I'm personally loving mesh ballet flats for summer. Unfortunately for platforms, it's time for them to exit stage left and make room for something a bit sleeker and more practical.

Bermuda shorts are back, baby. I'm wearing them with a simple white tank or T-shirt styled with heels to add a little flirtation to the vibe. If you're looking for shorts that have a professional vibe to them, then these are your best friends. On another note, it may be time to retire my denim cutoff shorts.

This summer, I'm leaning into my East Coast era and embracing New England chic as my summer aesthetic. This means lots of striped sweaters. I'm styling them thrown over my shoulders and paired with tailored white shorts or a miniskirt. While summer isn't necessarily the time to start going through your knitwear collection, a chilly beach night requires a light layer. I'd reach for something striped and elegant over something on the chunkier side.

Not that long ago, you couldn't walk around in New York City without seeing a sea of denim skirts. This spring and summer, however, I'm swapping mine for a more elevated column skirt. The best part? It pairs well with almost any shoes and can be dressed up for an office day or worn casually for a weekend.

Out of all the great basics out there, my favorite is a great tank top. There is something so effortlessly stylish and slightly sexy about it, and the styling opportunities are endless. Crop tops, on the other hand, have had their moment but feel dated to me now. I'm swapping mine for some high-quality tank tops.

Move over, mini bags. This season is all about raffia totes. While this bag is typically used for a beach day, I'm seeing women from Paris to NYC carry this bag to the farmers market, the office, a Sunday brunch… You name it. The raffia tote is having its moment.
