It's almost that time again. The warmer months are creeping up on us, and I'm manifesting nothing but breezy beach days and vacations on the coast of Italy. Normally, I opt for gold-, bronze-, and brick-colored hues for my summer-outing makeup looks, but this year, there's a trend causing a frenzy on the internet lately that I won't be missing out on. From rich, strawberry-red lips to raspberry-hued monochrome looks, berry girl makeup is definitely this season's It girl.

This trend is on my summer mood board for several reasons. First, there are so many ways to create a juicy, berry-inspired look—the possibilities are truly endless. Second, it doesn't require you to be a professional makeup artist to master it. There really are no rules when it comes to this trend. Anything goes! While most berry shades work for every skin tone, makeup artists tell me that there are certain ways to play it if you really want to flatter your specific skin tone. "I'm loving the berry girl trend—it's such a fresh, vibrant way to light up the skin for summer," says celebrity makeup artist Chelsea Gehr. "I start with a cream blush in a rich berry tone, blending it onto the high apples of the cheeks and across the bridge of the nose. I'll take the leftover product up toward the temples for a soft, lifted effect—it creates a soft lift and dimension, almost like a contour but without the heaviness of brown tones."

Gehr and fellow celebrity makeup artists Robert Bryan and Kat James shared an easy berry makeup cheat sheet for each skin tone below.

Fair skin tones: Try pink-based hues with hints of blue. Gehr says that soft raspberry is a great choice, and pink-leaning shades work beautifully to mimic a natural flush without overpowering your complexion.

Medium skin tones: Bryan is a big fan of pink and red tones with blue and violet hues for skin tones that are a little darker than fair.

Olive skin tones: Gehr says that olive skin tones tend to have green and neutral undertones, so deeper mauve and cool-toned berry help brighten the skin without clashing. James also loves mauve and rich raspberry for olive skin tones.

Brown skin tones: If your skin tone is a deeper brown, James says to embrace cranberry, pomegranate, and wine-stained tones. "They'll give you contrast and dimension without looking too bold or too muted," she shares.

Deep skin tones: For deep skin tones, Bryan loves vibrant, jewel-toned red and pink with purple and blue hues. Gehr says to look for boysenberry, blackberry, and deep plum shades to enhance the skin's warmth.

Pro Tips for Executing a Berry-Inspired Look

James says that there's a secret to making this look super juicy and glowy for summer. Hint: It starts with your base. "The key to making berry makeup feel summery (and not fall or holiday themed) is in the skin," she explains. "Start with a hydrated, light-reflective base—something that gives glow without feeling heavy. Then pick one or two areas to build your berry tones. For summer, less is definitely more. A favorite go-to look of mine? A raspberry cream blush on the cheeks, a sheer berry stain on the lips, and fluffy, lifted lashes. That's it. It's fresh, feminine, and looks just as good for brunch as it does for a night out."

Once you've got your base down, Gehr says perfecting a berry-inspired look is pretty easy. "Focus on shades in the raspberry, mulberry, and mauve families—tones with cool or neutral undertones that mimic the natural flush of the skin," she says. "For depth and contrast, a brown lip liner pairs beautifully with a sheer berry gloss or tinted balm, helping to define the lips while keeping the overall look soft and wearable." Bryan adds that multipurpose cream sticks and pots that can be used on the eyes, lips, and cheeks help create uniformity here. "This especially comes in handy during the hot weather since cream products are easy to apply and create a fresh and glowy finish," he says.
